In California - the assembly passes a car antismog bill, requiring installation of
exhaust antismog devices in 1966 through 1970 autos by 1973 to curb emission
of oxides of nitrogen, which creates the brownish color of air pollution. The
legislation provides that the antismog devices could not cost over $35 installed or
require maintenance more than once every 12 thousand miles at a cost of not
more than $15.
Near Knoxville - A Navy jet accidentally drops a 900-pound training missile at an
altitude of 5,000 feet. It ripped through the palatial farm home of James W.
Parrott - a Tennessee appeals court judge. The judge’s 16-year-old son and
grandmother were in the house at the time, but were not injured. The missile
went right through the middle of the house and crashed through two floors and
finally stopped when it hit a car in the driveway near the swimming pool. The
Navy said that the device contained no explosives.
William Proxmire
(D-Wis) the Senate’s foremost
critic of wasteful federal spending, says he will not
be a candidate for the Democratic presidential
nomination in 1972.
In a Gallup poll - President Nixon retains a clear
lead over Maine Senator Edmund S. Muskie, the
leading Democratic challenger for 1972.

Muskie - 35%

North American Rockwell unveils a $3 million
mockup of the B-1 Strategic Bomber, designed to
replace the aging B-52.
In sports - Dallas Cowboy coach Tom Landry
names
Roger Staubach
his number one
quarterback over veteran Craig Morton. “I think
it’s Roger’s time to make a move. I have
confidence in him or I wouldn’t have picked him.
Don’t ask me if we will go seven games with
Staubach. You expect seven games.” Morton
helped bring Dallas to the superbowl last year.

Elgin Baylor
- captain of the Los Angeles Lakers and
one of the greatest players of the game, retires this
week after 13-years in the NBA. He’ll remains with the
Lakers in a public relations and scouting capacity. “I
hoped to end my career after one last, successful
season. Out of fairness to the fans, to the Lakers and to
myself, I’ve always wanted to perform on the court up to
the level and up to the standards I have established
throughout my career. I do not want to prolong my
career to the time when I can’t maintain those
standards.”
