( Continued) McCarthy, who is seeking re-election this week, did not dwell on
Presidential contender Adlai Stevenson, but made remarks about three of his
advisors. He really concentrated on one of them - Bernard de Voto , and
repeated an accusation he made a week ago, that de Voto wrote a magazine
article in which he urged “no one give the FBI information on Communists in
government. McCarthy then said, “I ask the American people, especially good,
loyal Democrats when you go to the polls remember Stevenson said, ‘Judge me
by the advisors whom I select’ and when selected a top adviser who says, ‘If you
know about Communism, if you know about treason, don’t tell the FBI.’
Continues McCarthy - ”What will his (De Voto’s) job be if a calamity were to occur
tomorrow and Stevenson is elevated? Certainly he’ll be kept on in an important
post in government.”
Other two Stevenson advisors - Then McCarthy
repeated a charge - that Stevenson advisor
Arthur Schlesinger Jr . had advocated in a
magazine article that Communists be permitted to
teach in our schools. Also, “I don’t know if (James)
Wechsler is a Communist, but he admitted that
both had and his wife belonged to the Young
Communist League” McCarthy added.
Gen Eisenhower wins the Presidency by a
landslide, bringing an end to a 20-year era of
Democratic political reign. So far, the GOP has
wins in some 30 states.
Addressing a cheering crowd in New York, Gen Eisenhower pledges his best as
President: ‘I thank you for your courteous and generous message. Recognizing
the intensity of the difficulties that lie ahead, it is clearly necessary that men and
women of goodwill of both parties forget the political strife through which we have
passed and devote themselves in the single purpose of a better future. This, I
believe, they will do.”
Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson concedes victory at headquarters in
Springfield. The Governor smiled and laughed when the crowd began to chant.
“The people have rendered their verdict and I gladly accept it,” said Stevenson.
The GOP, for the first time, will take control of Congress. The flood of votes is still
coming in - and it looks like 31 million for Eisenhower, some 6 million past his
opponent.
