The number of bodies found in the
charred ruins of a radical group’s
stronghold rises to 11 - including 4
children. The armed confrontation at the
house, occupied by MOVE, began
Monday morning and by the evening,
police tried to end the standoff by using a
helicopter to drop a bomb on the roof. A
fire that followed spread to 60 other
houses. Mayor Wilson Goode vowed to
rebuild the neighborhood.
Housing and Urban development secretary Sam Pierce Jr., touring the
neighborhood where 270 people were left homeless after a confrontation
between police and a radical group, pledged 41 million to help restore the homes
that burned and announced that 49 properties will be made available as
temporary housing.
Wildfires rage across Florida, destroying more than 150 homes as Gov. Bob
Graham declares a state of emergency. A power failure sparked by the brush
fires, blacks out a 200-mile stretch of the Florida Gold Coast, leaving 3.5 million
residents without electricity.
President Reagan pounds his desk with his fist in impatience at congressional
obstacles to his Nicaraguan policy, saying, “We have to get where we can run a
foreign policy without a committee of 525 telling us that we can do.”
President Daniel Ortega announces on his return from a 14-nation tour that the
Soviet Union has promised to supply Nicaragua with
80% to 90% of its oil needs this year.
Israel swaps 1150 prisoners for three captured Israeli
soldiers in an exchanges supervised by the
International Committee of the Red Cross.
Americans, receiving their tax refund checks in
significant numbers, saw their disposable personal
income soar a record 2.9% last month.

Radio Marti is now on the air - Because of the new Radio Marti, Cuban President
Fidel Castro cuts off immigration pact between Cuba and the U.S.
The Federal Reserve lowers the lending rate it charges banks and other financial
institutions to 7.5% - down from 8.0% - the lowest in 7 years.
Medical - AIDS update - The Centers For Disease Control says the AIDS virus
can remain in a person’s body for five years or longer without producing disease
although it can still be transmitted to other people.
Sports - In Reno, Larry Holmes and Carl (The Truth) go 15 rounds, but Holmes
got the win.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is fined $500 for fighting with
Denver’s Danny Schayes during Game 2 of the NBA
Western Conference final series between the Lakers and the
Nuggets.
Baseball owners are looking at the concept of a partial salary
cap in a proposal to the Major League Players Assn over a
new collective bargaining agreement.
A 30-year-old Riverside (CA) woman gives birth to septuplets. The seventh, a
girl, died in the uterus.
Technology -
MCI charges rival AT&T wit cheating in the war for long distance customers. In
one area, AT&T submitted over 60,000 false orders to the local operating
companies.
Music news -
Don Johnson is set as a guest MTV veejay in September,
following the steps of Eddie Murphy, Hulk Hogan and Liberace.
Last week - a four-alarm fire gutted the headquarters of concert
promoter Bill Graham in San Francisco. He employs about 40
people. Graham believes the arson to be an anti-Semitic response
to his highly public objection to President Regan’s recent visit to the
Bitburg cemetery in West Germany. Graham took out a full-page ad in San
Francisco dailies saying so. He had lost his mother and a sister in the German

concentration camps and had himself fled Europe as an orphan at the outset of
WWII.
The Go-Go’s announce they are breaking up. The decision was made by
members Berlinda Carlisle and Charlotte Caffey.
With U.S. sales approaching 6.5 million copies, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the
U.S.A.” become the biggest-selling album in the history of Columbia Records.
Entertainment news -
In Portland (OR) - John Travolta joins thousands of other Scientology members
and supporters in a “crusade for religious freedom” to protest a $39-million fraud
judgment against the group. The $39 million judgment was awarded to ex-church
member Julie Christofferson Titchbourne who charged that the church made
fraudulent misrepresentations to her, claiming it would improve her study habits
and eyesight.
Passing - Actress Margaret Hamilton - immortalized as the
actress who played the famed Wicked Witch of the West in
“The Wizard of Oz.” She was 82. Ray
Bolger, the sole surviving star of the
film said of the actress - “She was a
terrifying villain in the picture, but an
angel in life.” All in all, she appeared in
75 movies and as many stage
productions, plus countless
appearances on radio, then television. Recently, she was
seen as the kindly Cora in the Maxwell House Coffee
commercials.

CBS Records President Walter Yetnikoff hands over a $6.5 million check to USA
for Africa - the first installment of many more millions forthcoming fro the sales of
“We Are The World.” To date, the single has sold 7, 382 million copies worldwide
and the album has sold 4,435 million worldwide. The organization says that will
bring its back balance to exactly $10,830.134.
Radio News - Ruth Meyer is now station manager of WHN, New York. Her boss
is Gary Stevens, President of Doubleday, but she was once Gary’s boss when he
was a WMCA Goodguy during the 1960’s. She programmed WHN when is
switched to country in 1973.

Television news -
WNBC-TV New York will not air a Phil Donahue show dealing with male
strippers. It will also be blacked-out in Las Vegas. A spokesman for the Phil
Donahue show said, “The stations have the right not to show it, but we feel it was
a fun show and that, in 1985, nothing happened that would make the country
upset.”
