The signalmen’s union calls a nationwide rail strike after last-minute efforts by the
Labor department to bring agreement fell through.
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat charges that opposition leaders had planned a
coup, bugged his offices and tried to disrupt the orderly process of government.
President Nixon signs an emergency law ordering an end of a two-day
nationwide railroad strike that stranded trainloads of commuters and cargo and
was beginning to cripple much of the American industry. He acted within hours
after Congress sent him the hastily enacted measure giving 13,000 striking
railroad signalmen a 13.5% wage hike and ordering a halt to the walkout at least
until Oct. 1.
Former Police Commissioner Frank L. Rizzo wins in Philadelphia Democratic
mayoral primary - beating two contenders.
President Nixon formally dedicates the new Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in
Austin amid ceremonies attended by Mr. Johnson and 3,000 of his best friends.

Week of May 15, 1971
San Francisco - Three men grabbed a young women, doused her with
flammable liquid and set her a flame. Luckily, police were nearby. One of the
men, with his arm afire, was grabbed by a patrolman - while the other patrolman
put out put out the girl’s fire with dirt. She’s in serious condition.
Passing - Humorist Ogden Nash. He was 68.
Passing - Donald Duncan - the man who gave us the Yo-Yo and parking meter.
He was 71.
Walter Cronkite says "that many of us see a clear indication on the part of this
Administration of a grand conspiracy to destroy the credibility of the press.” He
cited V/P Agnew as the head of the campaign.
