Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole announces that he will quit his Senate seat to
devote full time and energy to his presidential campaign as “a private citizen, a
Kansan, an American, just a man.”

Jeremy Michael Boorda
shoots himself in the chest and dies. Boorda, the Navy’s
top admiral was about to be questioned by a
newsmagazine about a combat decoration he had worn -
a decoration to which he was not entitled, Pentagon
officials say.
Large pieces of ValuJet Flight 592 are wrenched out of
the Everglades as federal investigators continue to search
for clues that could reveal the cause of the crash in which
110 people died.
ValuJet Airlines, still reeling from the fatal crash of one of its jetliners a week ago,
slices its daily flights by half to adequately check the safety of its fleet.
In a landmark victory for gay rights, the Supreme Court rules that gays and
lesbians may not be singled out for official discrimination simply because of
“animus” toward their sexual orientation.

play interactive games on the Internet.

launching national services this week that
will allow gamers to play a wide range of
personal computer games over the Internet.
Sega announces plans to offer a modem
attachment to allow online gaming.

Apple introduces a “Net Box” at the show.
The boxes or network computers, make the
Internet accessible to a broad range of
consumers who can’t afford a traditional PC
or don’t want to learn how to use one. In a separate action - IBM, Sun and
Oracle Corp agree on a Net Box standard. Net boxes use a TV set instead of a
computer monitor. Critics including Microsoft, say such machines will never take

off because consumers are accustomed to full-blown PC’s. Low-end PC’s go for
around $1000. The Net Boxes will retail for around $500.
More Computer News - CompuServe says it is shifting most of its content to the
Internet. Although it will cost millions of dollars to convert its content into
hypertext markup language - the universal code governing the graphic-rich
portion of the Internet, the transition will save the company money in the long run
by making it easier and cheaper to produce those offerings. Microsoft Network
and Prodigy and others have already begun the shift to the Web. Only America
Online remains with 100% proprietary software. AOL has 5.5 million customers,
CompuServe has 4.7 million.

Scott Brayton
, one of the most popular
drivers at Indianapolis is killed while practicing for the
Indianapolis 500. Brayton’s right rear tire deflated,
sending the Lola-Menard into a slow spin as it
entered the second turn.

C-Span debuts “All About Books” on Saturday. It’s a five-hour weekend
programming block devoted to books, authors and the publishing industry.
Ben Stiller and Jeanine Garofalo are named co-hosts of the 1996 MTV Movie
Awards airing June 13.
It’s announced that part-timer
Bob Goen
will take over
the weekday anchor desk for “Entertainment Tonight on
May 31. Leaving is longtime co-host John Tesh.
On the season finale of “Seinfeld” this week, it looks
like George will remain a bachelor. Susan expires from
licking a toxic adhesive on their wedding invitation
envelopes. NBC says they received some calls to the
dark humor.
After 264 episodes and 12 seasons - CBS cancels
“Murder She Wrote” starring Angela Lansbury. “My
gratitude and appreciation to all of you, our great family of viewers - who along
with me have solved 264 murder mysteries over 12 great years. With Love,
Jessica Fletcher.”
UPN says it will offer 2 hours of Sunday morning animated
series beginning this fall. Look for “

,” “Jumanji,” “The Incredible Hulk,” and “B.A.D.”
More UPN - the network is dropping “Nowhere Man,” “Swift
Justice,” “Minor Adjustments and “Paranormal Borderline.”
