regulators and major banks announce a $7.5 billion loan package for Continental
Bank, the largest bank bail out in US history.

scores a landslide victory over Walter Mondale and
Jesse Jackson in the Oregon and Nebraska primaries.
Assembling with his wife and son said the day’s results
showed voters had “turned their backs on negative
attack politics.
A judge orders Disneyland to stop enforcing a policy
against same sex dancing. A gay couple was removed
from the Tomorrowland Terrace in 1980 and
challenged the park’s policies.
Poland becomes the 10th country to join the Soviet-led
boycott of the Los Angles Olympics. Romania is now
the only Soviet Bloc nation that has not joined the pullout.

, 36, of Lung Cancer in Los Angeles.
Kaufman, best know as the shy and innocent immigrant, Latka
Gravas in “Taxi,” was diagnosed last January but continued to
perform.

Irwin Shaw
(71) in Switzerland. For
over half a century, Shaw was known for
his many novels, short stores, dramas,
essays, and screenplays - for over half a century. His “The
Young Lions” was the definitive novel for many returning
WWII GI’s.
Proctor & Gamble returns to the feminine hygiene market with
a national rollout of “Always.” The product has already been test-marketed for a
little more than a year.

Jim Palmer
, 38, bids an emotional
farewell to the Baltimore Orioles after he was placed on
unconditional release waivers. “I still think I can pitch and I
have a desire to do that.” Cutting his final press
conference short, Palmer continued: “I am going to leave.

Former St Louis Cardinals cornerback Eric Washington shoots and kills himself
when officers go to question him at his home in connection with two recent bank
robberies. Washington played for the Cardinals from ‘72 to ‘74. A man identified
as Washington was caught on camera during a St Louis bank robbery.
On ABC’s “Wide World Of Sports” Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Kevin Howard “in
Ray’s final fight.” The actual event took place last week at the Sands Hotel in Las
Vegas.
