Braniff Airways - near bankruptcy for more than a year,
suspends all passenger travel. It’s the first U.S. airline to
shut down. The Dallas-based airline refused to say why it
shut down, but only issued a statement which began like
this: “This afternoon, Braniff Airways began suspending all
flying operations domestic and foreign, We sincerely
regret the inconvenience that this suspension of service is causing to our
customers.”
A young man dressed as a priest lunges at Pope John Paul II with a 15inch
dagger knife at the basilica of Portugal’s shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. The Pope
was not hurt and his attacker was overpowered and taken away. The assailant
was identified as Juan Fernandez Krohn (32).
Britain ends a lull in the South Atlantic conflict and strikes the Falkland Islands by
air and sea. A fishing vessel carrying equipment to spy on the British task force
was attacked. Argentina claims British Sea Harrier Jets sunk the vessel Narval
and then machine-gunned survivors in its lifeboats. Defense Ministry spokesman
described as “ludicrous” the charge that the lifeboats were strafed and that there
were 24 survivors.
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government
concludes that an invasion will almost certainly be
necessary to recover the Falkland Islands from
Argentina, which seized them April 2nd. Estimates of
a possible attack range from two days to two weeks.
Soviet spy Alexei Mikhailvoch Kozlov held by South
Africa since July of 1980 is exchanged for eight “very
important” Western agents and a South African
soldier.
U.S District Judge William B. Bryant throws out all
the criminal charges against former Rep Richard Kelly (R-Fla). Kelly was
videotaped stuffing $100 bills into his pockets at a Washington DC townhouse in
the FBI’s Abscam undercover investigation. He said he took the payoff only to
conduct his own investigation of men he said he regarded as unethical. The
judge called Abscam “a loose cannon rolling around on the deck of the criminal
justice system.”

In radio news - WABC Radio (77-
AM) switches to talk this week,
ending an era for contemporary
music on the AM dial. The station is
the most-listened-to music station of
all time, dominating the ratings for 10
years from mid 1969 to mid 1978.
WABC is dumping top-40 in favor of
the new format, despite the fact that
two established New York stations
WOR-710 and WMCA-570 already
broadcast talk and despite the
format’s higher costs. According to the National Association of Broadcasters - the
expenses of full-time AM stations with talk and news formats averaged $1.7
million in 1980, compared with average expenses of $449,000 for all full-time AM
stations. The announcement several months ago that WABC would adopt a talk
format provoked widespread predictions that once powerful top-40 programming
was washed-up on the AM dial. At a period during the early 70’s, WABC radio
could boast listenership of 6 million persons per week. The final show was
performed by WABC veteran personalities Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy . Last
song played was John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

on his “Casablanca” Record label. After a stint as head
of Cameo-Parkway Records in the late 60’s, he became
president of Buddah Records and worked with such
“Bubblegum” acts such as the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and
Ohio Express. In 1973, he formed Casablanca and
watched it blossom with the disco boom of the late 70’s. He is survived by his
wife, Joyce and four children.
Passing - actor Hugh Beaumont (72) - best known for
his portrayal of Ward Cleaver on “Leave It To Beaver” in
the late 50’s and early 60’s. He died of an apparent heart
attack while visiting his son in Germany. Beaumont had
overcome a stroke he suffered 10 years ago which left
