Health advisory issued - More Dioxin - A trailer park in Gray Summit Missouri
contains nearly four times the level of dioxin found in Times Beach, so say
federal officials.
Economy - U.S. factories churn out goods in April at the fastest pace in nearly
eight years while wholesale prices decline once again.
President Reagan defends his Administration’s trade policies and says he
opposes any “quick fix” efforts to protect U.S. business against foreign imports.
“We and our trading partners are in the same boat. If one partner shoots a hole in
the boat, it makes no sense for the other partner to shoot another hole in the
boat.’
The Republican-controlled Senate defies both President Reagan and its own
GOP leadership, voting to reject a 1984 budget plan calling for nominal tax
increases and a deficit of more than $190 billion.
The wife of Andrei D. Sakharov says the exiled
human rights leader is willing to leave the Soviet
Union, but soviet authorities said he must stay for
national security reasons.
Pope Jon Paul II tells an international group of
scientists that the Roman Catholic Church made the
astronomer Galileo suffer 350 years ago and indicated
that the church had overstepped its rights in
condemning him for conducting scientific research.
Sports - John Rutherford - three-time winner of the
Indy 500 escapes serious injury when he smashed his
new Wildcat racer into a wall during practice for the
May 29 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Gary Anderson a University of Arkansas running back-wide receiver and a first-
round pick of the Dan Diego chargers, signs to play with the Tampa bay Bandits
of the USFL.

President Regan blames 1960’s Great Society programs and noisy liberal
political groups for the nation’s economic ills.
Entertainment news -
A helium balloon carrying four people, including the wife of comedian Flip Wilson,
crashes in northwest Missouri, injuring her and another woman aboard. Husband
Flip was in another balloon, but they landed safely.
Television news -
A Denver jury awards $5.9 million to
Willow Lynn Cramlet who sued Phil
Donahue’s production company for
refusing to divulge the whereabouts of
her former husband and her young son
after Donahue interviewed the man about
child snatching. A spokesman for the
production company, multimedia, said
they were shocked. Members of
Donahue’s staff disguised her former
husband, Wayne Anderson so that he
would not be recognized on the show,
arraigned a hotel room for him under an
alias, mutilated his airplane ticket to
eliminate the name of the city he came
from, cared for him during the taping and
laundered through a staff member’s
personal bank account for expense
money for Anderson. Cramlet saw the show, and despite the disguise,
recognized him.
She was given custody of her son, Eland when the couple divorced in 1979.
During one of his visits, the boy was not returned to his mother.
Television news -
CBS cancels “Archie Bunker’s Place” and it will be the first time since 1971 that
Archie Bunker will not be seen on prime time television.
Elton Rule who guided ABC to the top of the rating during the late 1970’s says he
will resign as vice chairman of ABC.
Los Angeles news anchor Connie Chung says she is leaving KNXT (Channel 2)
in July.

Fantasy Island earlier this year, will be replaced by British
character actor Christopher Hewett .
