In the news - Despite warnings of military reprisals, the parliament of Bosnia’s
rebel Serbs refuse to approve an international peace accord, deciding instead to
put it to a vote of the Bosnian Serb people... President Clinton calls the Bosnian
Serb assembly’s rejection of a peace plan a “grave disappointment” and
demands that the international community agrees to “act quickly and decisively”
against the Serbs.
U.N. military observers enter the
besieged Muslim enclave of Zepa in
eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina to discover
widespread destruction and fewer than
250 people left in a town of almost
40,000 residents and refugees.
President Clinton agrees to slash funds
for transportation, public health,
environmental and poverty programs in
the face of congressional demands for
further spending cuts.
The Rev Jesse Jackson and 24 others
are arrested in Washington after noisy
protesters block the lobby of the National Labor Relations Board for an hour.
Jackson was with a group of about 200 protesters who were seeking a board
more sympathetic to labor, along with legislation to accord more security to union
workers.
Armand D’Amato (47) - brother of Sen Alfonse M. D’Amato (R-NY) is convicted
of accepting $32,500 from a defense contractor in exchange for agreeing to
lobby his brother for contract awards. He said he would appeal - “I didn’t do
anything wrong, so I’m absolutely upset about it.”
Computer news - Microsoft is
selling its latest version of its
industry standard MS-DOS
software, but there are reports with
problems with the program. The
company says its “
DOS-6”
has sold
more then 3 million copies - a
record for any software program in
so short a time and double the
original forecast. DOS-6 improves

on early versions and includes new features such as data compression. Trade
paper Infoworld reports this week that extensive testing has shown that DOS 6
has significant bugs, especially in the data compression feature. Microsoft
contends that the testing was flawed and denies there are any significant
problems with the software. PC Week, another computer publication, says it has
not uncovered the types of problems reported by its rival. But says PC Week -
the disk compression should not be used unless files are backed up first and the
latest version of Norton Utilities is on hand to address any problems. Because of
the Infoworld report, some major buyers are holding off purchase of the program.
More Computer News - a new version of Lotus 1-
2-3 for Windows is out this week after stumbling,
critics say this version is much better and should
give Microsoft’s Excel and Borland International’s
Quattro Pro a run for it. A slew of problems have
hurt it over the last few years. The company
bungled an important 1-2-3 upgrade, failed to
complete a merger with Novell, Inc and
experienced a series of high-level executive
departures. Most important, Lotus failed to
develop a version of 1-2-3 for Microsoft’s
Windows personal-computer operating
environment. Instead, the company bet on IBM’s
O2/2 as the likely successor to the DOS software
and was caught off-guard by the success of
Windows. The first Windows version of 1-2-3 arrived in 1991, but fizzed. Other
than the new version of 1-2-3, another bright spot for Lotus is something called
“Notes” - widely recognized as the pioneering product in “groupware.” Notes
enables people to work together on documents and maintains access to a
common set of files. A key feature to Notes is technology called “replication.”
Notes files in different PC’s are automatically updated - great for customer
tracking and similar tasks.
DirectTV ready to go - the fledgling satellite company announces it has secured
programming from 10 TV networks. The planed 150-channel system, which will
broadcast directly to subscriber’s homes from two Hughes satellites, will aim at
the 38% of viewers currently not receiving cable television. The cable TV
channels DirectTV will include - CNN, Headline News, the Cartoon Network,
TBS, TNT, USA Network, the Sci-Fi Channel, the Nashville Network, Country
Music Television and the Family Channel. Direct-TV is owned by General Motors
Hughes Electronics subsidiary. The company is spending $600 million to build
and launch two powerful satellites to serve subscribers in all 50 states. DirectTV

had made deals with Paramount and Columbia and expects to have all the other
major studios for the broadcast of movies - about a month after they come out
on home video release. Cable television companies aren’t standing still.
Operators have begun to upgrade systems to 500 channels. So far, subscribers
to satellite television may have to foot-out $700 for equipment (dish-antenna and
receiver) plus an additional $25 a month for the service. Lets see what happens.

Lettermen. He’s already turned-down NBC.

O’Brien. Said Letterman - “Just a world of advice, I think the network would kind
of like to see you in a tie.”

Attitude. Their 1989 album “Straight
Outta Compton” is the one that
popularized the gangsta rap movement.
Trends - record companies today are
worried about shops that sell used CD’s
which could divert funds away from new
product. This week, Sony Music’s
distribution arm joins Time Warner’s
WEA and Thorn-EMI’s CEMA in refusing
to pay for new product ads for stores that
cell used CD’s. Others are bound to
follow. Last December - Wherehouse
Entertainment with its 306 outlets,
became the first major retail chain to
enter the used CD business. Used CD’s make up less than 1% of all compact
discs sold in the country, but could carve out as much as 20% of the marketplace
by 1998 says studies conducted by record companies. (Of course, this would be
thwarted by the Internet, MP3 and music-sharing websites).
Styles - Donna Koran is about to go public with her clothes company. Koran
started her successful business in 1984 after years as a co-designer for Anne
Klein Cos. Last year, Koran had sales of $270 million up from $119 million in
1989. The stock offering will allow the company to expand.
Trends seen in videos - Bon Jovi is sporting a new haircut.
It use to fall to the middle of his back, but now it clears his
shoulders. Also, allot of male rockers are wearing crosses;
Axl Rose - “Dead Horse,” Bobby Brown in “That’s the Way
Live is” and PM Dawn in “Looking Through Patient Eyes.”
