May Day celebration in Moscow as thousands of workers march and the
Chernobyl disaster is pretty much ignored.
Chernobyl - the fire is contained, but radiation is still leaking.
Authorities at the Chernobyl nuclear plant
initially failed to accurately assess the
danger from a fiery explosion, a Kremlin
official said, and delayed the evacuation of
nearby residents for more that 36 hours.
President Reagan, pressing a campaign to
force the Soviet Union to disclose details of
the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, accuses
Moscow of disregarding “the legitimate concerns of people everywhere.”
Romania and Yugoslavia announce precautions to protect their populations
against radioactive contamination as shifting winds carried fallout from the
damaged soviet reactor at Chernobyl southwest across the Balkans. State
television in Romania reported for the first time since the accident that radiation
levels were registering “much over normal” in several areas of the country.
Summit in Tokyo - President Reagan and French President Francois Mitterrand
go to lengths to patch up their relationship which has been strained since France
refused to allow American F-111 warplanes to fly through its airspace on their
way to last month’s bombing raid of Libya.
The Supreme Court rules that unyielding opponents of the death penalty may be
excluded from juries in capital cases.
Coleco Industries, who helped popularize computer games in 1982 with Donkey
Kong and others, has agreed to purchase Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit.

is shuttering Playboy clubs in Chicago,
Los Angeles and New York City. The first the Playboy
Clubs - Chicago - opened February 28, 1960. Gloria
Steinem was a Playboy bunny in 1963 while on a
journalism assignment and so it goes - helped her into
a leader of the feminist movement. Her caustic

assessment of the treatment of women in the clubs was made into a TV movie
last year.
At Glens Falls - Mike Tyson wins by decision over James (Quick) Tillis. his first
decision victory in 20 fights and 19 KO’s and Tyson wasn’t happy.
The Labor Department says the unemployment dropped .1% to 7% last month.

Michael Jackson
renews
his partnership with Pepsi-Cola. The pact is worth
$50 million with an initial up-front payment of
between $10-$15 million. The agreement calls for
Jackson to help create and appear in worldwide
Pepsi ads, and for Pepsi to sponsor Jackson’s
next album and any accompanying concert tour. In
1984, Pepsi sponsored Jackson’s hugely
successful Victory Tour and the singer appeared
along with his five brothers, in two highly
publicized and award-winning TV commercials on
behalf of Pepsi.
Joan Rivers will get her own late night talkshow on Fox. Rivers has been a
frequent guest host on rival “Tonight” for Johnny Carson. Her show will air five
nights a week.
