President Reagan decides to impose a total trade embargo against Nicaragua.
President Reagan
leaves for West Germany, where
he’ll visit the Bitburg war cemetery and the economic
summit.
E.F. Hutton the nation’s fifth larges investment firm,
pleads guilty and is fined $2 million for a massive mail
and wire fraud scheme that netted the company millions
of dollars on interest-free loans.
Arriving in Madrid - President Reagan plans to use
propose before the European Parliament - a direct
military communications link between the Soviet Union
and the United States.
President Regan warns 10,000 cheering German young people of the threat “on
the other side of the wall” and calls for the reunification of Germany.
After taking a walk at a death camp, President Reagan laid a wreath at the
Bitburg cemetery where the German war dead include 4 U.S. combat soldiers
and said it opened old wounds.
Economic summit in Bonn - President Regan’s struggle to persuade the
economic summit to set a date next year for beginning a new round of global
trade talks ends in failure when France refused to budge from its opposition to
starting the talks in 1986.
More Bonn - Allies are not so hot and run cool toward President Reagan over
Nicaragua and his “star wars” plan.
Hilton Hotels Corp has sold its unopened and nearly complete Atlantic City hotel
casino to New York real estate magnate Donald Trump for about $300,000,000
in cash.
Rebel leaders report that rearmed Nicaraguan contra rebels are moving back into
Nicaragua from their bases in Honduras to renew their campaign against the
Sandinista government.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan says that Libyan strongman Moammar
Kadafi is giving him a $5 million interest-free loan to help him begin a self-
contained economic system for blacks in America, the Caribbean and Africa.
President Reagan accuses the senate of an “irresponsible act” for dismantling his
latest budget plan, and Secretary of state George Shultz said the senators’ “no-
growth” proposal for defense spending could hamper arms negotiations.
Passing - Leonard Ross - child prodigy who graduated from high school at 14,
college at 18 and law school at 20. He was a kid participant in two 1950’s quiz
TV shows where he won a total of $164,000 dollars. He was 39.
Technology -
(Beyond copiers) Xerox unveils a new line of
office automated systems. The new gear includes
printers, personal computers, word processors,
software and other accessories, which the
company hopes, will give it a foothold in the
office-automation business. The new computers
and word processors are based on the same
personal computer that is made by Italian
manufacture ring. Co Olivetti and marketed by
American Telephone & Telegraph as its model
PC6300. Xerox’s strategy is to offer departmental
office systems that exploit the appeal of Xerox’s
copiers - especially the successful laser copiers
and their larger cousins.
Television news -
MTV Networks reports net income of $2.468,000 on revenue of $29,933,000 for
the first quarter of 1985 - up 46% over 1984.
Johnny Carson (59) signs a multi-year contract to continue with the “Tonight”
show.
HBO debuts an hour-long special o the
making of “We Are the World.” The “We
Are The World” single is beginning a
snowballing charity work effect, but is
stalled at 4 million in sales after an initial
unprecedented consumer demand. The
song was recorded in Los Angeles by 45

rock and pop music stars in a 10-hour session.
The Playboy Channel plans to offer more features and less skin in an attempt to
broaden its appeal. It’s been plagued by a lack of new subscribers and some
operators, including Group W, refuse to carry the channel.
Australian
Rupert Murdoch
reaches an agreement to buy the
seven Metromedia television stations for $2 billion - including
WNEW-TV in New York and KTTV in Los Angeles. According
to FCC rules, he’ll have to become a U.S. citizen. How will he
get around it?
HBO has taken another step to scramble its signal. It has
begun filed testing the encryption process on its Cinemax
eastern feed and the HBO eastern feed. HBO plans full
scramble implementation by September.
Radio news
- The Children’s Radio Network which went on the air with its first
station last December (WEXI-AM Jacksonville) is making plans to buy 12 AM
stations. The network began airing on a second AM station April 1 with KAAR-
AM Portland, Ore and will debut in Phoenix this month on KSUN-AM.
CBS will buy 5 Taft radio stations - WLTT-FM Washington; KTXQ-Fm Dallas,
KLTR-FM Houston and WSUN-AM and WYNF-FM Tampa.
Music news -
Alabama once again emerges as the big winner in the Academy of Country
Music Awards - getting album of the year, entertainer of the year and group of
the year.
Talking Heads’
David Byrne
is previewing his new
solo album, “The Knee Plays” on some radio stations.
“Simple Minds” has a big hit with “Don’t You” which is
featured in “The Breakfast Club.” Lead Jim Kerr has
recorded seven Simple Minds albums since 1978.
Although big in their native England, most American
fans are only aware if its last two albums, “New Gold
Dream” and “Sparkle in the Rain.”
Madonna has been considerably aided by taped
background vocals during her concerts. In the past,
most pop fans accepted the use of tapes by bands

such as Queen and ELO to reproduce elaborate instrumental and choral effects.
Look for Tippi Hedren and other stars from original Hitchcock films on NBC’s all
new “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.”
