President Reagan winds-up a six-day visit to China, heading to Alaska. In
Shanghai, more than a million greeted his motorcade. He declared his journey in
China - “Leaves me confident U.S.-China relations are good and getting better.”
Poll projections say moderate candidate Jose Napoleon Duarte has won El
Salvador’s presidential election.
The Reagan Administration agrees to a $13.9 billion reduction after pressure by
Congress and the record-breaking federal budge deficit.
Shaken by his last flight on his “Rainbow express” propjet plane, Jesse Jackson
says he will fly in a Lear. The plane dropped hundreds of feet in seconds
numerous times. Only later did passengers learn they had flown through a
tornado field and that 30 tornadoes had touched down underneath the plane’s
flight path.
Walter Mondale wins in the Texas caucuses, while Jesse Jackson triumphed in
Louisiana.
Nearly half of all Americans in mid 1982 lived in the 36 metro area with
populations of 1 million or more.
Vice President Bush loves it that
President Reagan has been labeled
the “man in the Teflon suit.” The
handle was given to him in a recent
speech by Rep.
Patricia Schroeder
(D-CO) who said nothing sticks to the
President. “He is responsible for
nothing - civil rights, Central America,
the Middle East, the economy, the
environment. He is just the master of
ceremonies at someone else’s dinner.”
Said Vice President Bush - “Ronald
Reagan does have a very good way of
taking firm leadership positions but of
not getting down into the mire and
trying to respond to lots of silly charges.”

President Reagan, saying he has “no tolerance” for what the Ku Klux Klan
represents, repudiates the group’s two-week-old endorsement in a letter to the
U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. “Those of us in public life can only resent the
use of our names by those who seek political recognition for the repugnant
doctrines of hate they espouse,” said the President.”
The nation’s unemployment rate remains at 7.8% for the third straight month.
Sports -
The United States will meet the Soviet Union at the Rose Bowl on July 31 in the
1984 Olympic games soccer Tournament.
John McEnroe
says every time he argues with an
official, he’s striking his own little blow for the betterment
of tennis. “A lot of linesmen have no idea what’s going
on. When I insult one of them, I’m getting blamed, but I
should be getting thanked. I’m only pointing out what
everybody else knows - that these people should not be
out on the court anyway.”

Paramount says it’s releasing “Terms of Endearment” which
recently one several Oscars, to video tape and video-disc.

Music news
- Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” just passed the 20-
million sales mark in the U.S and 33 million worldwide. The
album was released in December, 1982. What’s interesting, it
has had more #1 weeks in 1984 than last year. Jackson’s
“Victory” tour should enhance sales even more.
Perhaps not competent to stand trial for the murder of his son - Marvin Gaye Sr.
is suffering from a brain tumor the size of a walnut. His lawyer says if not treated,
it could render Gaye blind within a few months.
