Sen. Alben Barkley (D-KY) collapses and dies
of a heart attack. He was 78.
The Marine Corps accuses Staff Sgt. Matthew
McKeon of manslaughter charging that - under
the influence of vodka - he led six recruits - he
led six recruits to death by drowning with the
threat that every man in the platoon would drown
or be eaten by sharks.
White Sands NM - An Aerobee-rocket, which the
Navy has expected to fire 185 miles into the
ionosphere, fizzled out at about 10,000 feet and
crashed back to earth.
Off Cape Cod - The nation’s first radar island goes into action as a link in the
chain of defense against enemy aircraft. The man-made island has started
limited operation with the eastern Air defense Force.
The London Daily Telegraph reports that large shipments of Czech arms have
started reaching Syria as part of a Communist plan to gain a foothold in the
Middle East.
President Eisenhower says that while delays in production of the B-42 long-range
bomber have been disappointing he would like Americans to broaden their vision
a bit about their military power.
London - A member of Parliament says he will demand that the government
disclosed the mysterious fate of a frogman rumored to have been killed or
captured while swimming near the Russian cruiser that brought Soviet Leaders
Bulganin and Khrushchev to Britain.
Plenty of oil - National petroleum reserves currently are the highest in U.S.
history.
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower goes to a Congressional
Club party and comes away “with a song in my
heart.” The song, titled “Mamie,” was written
especially for the club’s midday breakfast by Slim
Willett of Abilene, Tex. He’s the composer of the
Perry Como hit - “Don’t Let The Stars Get In Your

Eyes.” “Just like a rainbow brightens a rainy day, Mamie can smile and her
winning smile makes it a brighter day…”
Returns to New York - U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold returns to a
chorus of praise and certainty of Security Council approval for his Middle East
negotiations on Israeli-Arab peace.
Sports - Needles, the Florida-bred favorite, wins the $167,550 Kentucky Derby
by three-quarters of a length.
Technology - Henry Dreyfuss, a leading industrial designer says automobiles of
the future will hover a few feet off the ground, and it will be possible for a motorist
to reach a destination with that aid of “an IMB card which will keep you on the
beam.” He predicted that it will be possible in the future ‘to talk a letter into a
typewriter or dictating machine and get a neatly typed letter out the other end.”
Entertainment news -
He dropped out of site for nearly 3 years. On May 12,
1953, Montgomery Clift completed work in the film,
“From here To Eternity,” and went to New York and
dropped out, as far as Hollywood was concerned. This
week, he’s back in Hollywood and has begun work on
MGM’s Civil War movie from the novel “Raintree County.”
Television news -
Ray Bolger is signed by NBC to star in sixteen one-hour
musical variety programs beginning in September. The
series, titled “Washington Square,” will be presented at
intervals of two or three weeks on Tuesdays. Bolger’s show will alternate with
those of Dinah Shore, Bob Hope and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
Terrytoons , now owned by CBS Films, sells some
of its library to independent stations. WOR-TV just
bought 156 Terrytoon cartoons. CBS itself is
starting a Terrytoon cartoon show on June 6,
opposite “Disneyland” on ABC-TV. Comedian Dick
Van Dyke will host. Of course - other Terrytoon
cartoons are featured on the Saturday morning
“Mighty Mouse Playhouse” over CBS-TV.
Rod Serling has finished the first draft of “Requiem for a Heavyweight” for CBS-
TV’s “Playhouse 90.” It’ll be broadcast in October.

More Lawrence Welk - probably the biggest surprise hit of this TV season -
ABC-TV says Welk will have another show broadcast on Mondays from 9:30p-
10:30p. Dodge will sponsor this one too. Welk is seen on Saturday nights.
Radio news - WINS, New York which normal broadcasts Yankee games, will re-
create about 20 games of other major league teams when the New York team is
not playing. The first will be next week with a broadcast of the Cleveland Indians-
Boston Red Sox game at Boston. Re-creation consists of reading the plays form
a wire ticker from the ballpark and presenting it moments later from the WINS
studio.
