Passing -
Donald Franklin Duncan Sr
. (71) - gave us
the Duncan Yo-Yo, creating a nationwide fad. He didn’t
invent it, but his advertising ads created demand by
showing us how to the “loop the loop,” go “around the
world.” and “walk the dog.” 20 to 30 million Duncan Yo-
Yo’s were sold in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. He also
invented the parking meter.
Passing - Sir Tyrone Guthrie (70)- giant of the British
theater. Once described himself as “hopelessly stage
struck.”
Mary Travers
performs solo for the first time - away from “Peter, Paul & Mary” at
the Troubadour in Hollywood. Her first solo album “Mary” has just been released
on Warner Brothers Records - the same label the trio stayed on all those years. “I
didn’t want to be a solo performer. It bothered me
when the group broke up. I didn’t know what I was
about. For 10 years I had an edited viewpoint and I
didn’t have to ask myself if I was talented. I just got
up, sang and had a good time. The album will include
material from Colorado singer/songwriter John Denver
- who wrote the group’s big hit “Leavin’ On A Jet
Plane.”
“The reason I think we lasted so long is that the three
of us had been brought up with a sense of discipline.
We were careful not to manipulate each other. When
we give someone that freedom, you take away the
structure for rebellion.” Mary says the reason why the
group broke up is that Paul Stookey didn’t want to do any more concerts and that
“he’s involved in Christ now and feels that performing is not relevant to anything.”
During their heyday - they performed 125 concerts a year. Even though they had
cut their appearances down to 40 a year, Paul found it wasn’t enough. She says
that’s the real reason - the wrong reason being Peter Yarrow’s arrest on moral’s
charges (see pop history now search).
Marries - Mick Jagger (27) of the Rolling
Stones to Bianca Perez Morena de
Macias (26) in St. Tropez, France.

McCartney. The couple was last seen
getting into a white limo with a bottle of
champagne.

(980) in Los Angeles. The average radio newsman on competing station KNX
makes $400 a week but KFWB is paying $316. KFWB does better in the ratings.
The newsman were joined by 16 engineers. The sudden strike caused the station
to air a recorded documentary as it scrambled to get a staff of supervisors and
non-striking personnel. The station is owned by Group W (Westinghouse
Broadcasting).
Also in Los Angeles - a warrant for the arrest of
popular evening disc jockey
(Humble) Harve Miller
is
issued along with an all-points bulletin. He’s wanted for
the murder of his wife - Gladys, who was found shot to
death in their home last week. Miller did the popular 6
to 9pm shift on 93-KHJ.
Pirate radio station “Radio North Sea International” -
anchored 10 miles off the Dutch coast is set afire and
bombed. The crew and staff of 20 seaman, disc
jockeys and engineers escape without injury.
Witnesses say a launch raced alongside the ship and
lobbed a firebomb through a porthole. Disc Jockeys suspended programming
and broadcast mayday distress calls to their audience. The radio station played
popular music and was a commercial broadcaster. It is being viewed as an attack
from a competitor.

set.

first program in the afternoon portion of the network’s daytime schedule. NBC is
