President Carter shuts off the export of all American goods to the Summer
Olympics in Moscow, a move that could also bloc NBC’s coverage of the games.
Iranian President Abol-hassan Bani-Sadr meets
with three leaders of the militant students
occupying the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. There’s an
expectation the hostages will be transferred to the
Iranian government.
Washington state’s Mt. St. Helens is beginning to
come alive with belches of gas and explosions. It
shot volcanic ash 4 miles high. Is it ready to go?
Refuge is permanent - The deposed Shah of Iran
returns to the Middle East. Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat declared the 60-year-old exile had
found a “permanent “ home in his country.
Iranian officials warn that the Shah of Iran’s move from Panama to Egypt will
obstruct progress toward resolving the crisis over the U.S. Embassy hostages in
Tehran and that some may be tried as spies as soon as the new parliament
convenes. Those convicted will go to prison.
School headmistress Jean Harris pleads innocent to
second-degree murder in the slaying of “Scarsdale
Diet” author Dr. Herman Tarnower. Court papers reveal
she was fed up with the physician because “he slept
with every woman he could.” As it turned out -
Tarnower bequeathed Ms. Harris $220,000 and willed
another $200,000 to a nurse he had been dating.
Elderly OK - President carter says he will not call for
cuts in Social Security benefits, supplemental security
income, Medicare, Meals on Wheels or assisted housing in his budget-cutting
proposals.
Primary upset - Sen. Edward Kennedy defeats President Carter in New York and
Connecticut. George Bush beat Reagan in Connecticut, but Reagan won in New
York.

GOP Presidential candidate John B. Anderson says President Carter had a mind
like a seat cushion, “It bears the imprint of the last person who sat in it.”
A mine elevator cable snaps, plunging all 23 miners aboard more than a mile to
their deaths at the bottom of the world’s deepest and largest gold mine, not far
from Johannesburg, South Africa.
Most of Afghanistan’s national soccer team has defected to West Germany,
citing hatred of the soviet occupation army in their homeland.
In England, some call her “Big Spender Annie.”
Princess Anne , daughter of the Queen, shown by
recent polls to be the most unpopular member of the
royal family, is getting rapped for spending too much
money. She recently had a new stable built complete
with more animals. This, at a time when inflation in
Britain is 19%.

Another run at Las Vegas - Owners of Caesars
Palace file an application with the Nevada gaming
agencies asking that Frank Sinatra be approved as a “key employee” of the
hotel-casino.
Sports - Passing - Jesse Owens , the black track star that won four gold
medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but was snubbed by Adolf Hitler. He was 66.
Lee Trevino holds off Ben Crenshaw to win the Tournament
Players Championship in Florida.
Tracy Austin beats Martina Navratilova in the final of the
$300,000 women’s tennis championship.
Music news -
Passing - Mantovani - Orchestra
conductor known as the master of lush strings. He was
74.
Passing - Crooner Dick Haymes (64). He was married
some 6 times and appeared in 35 movies.

Television news -
Debuting this week - “ABC News Nightline” on ABC-TV. The show is an
outgrowth of the hostage updates called “America Held Hostage,” seen late
nights on ABC for the past six months. “Nightline” will air 20-minutes Mon-Thurs
nights at 11:30p. Anchor Ted Koppel says the show will focus chiefly on domestic
matters.
