Back into to Soviet fold - Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev orders
Lithuania’s citizens to surrender all weapons and then imposed tough visa
controls and border checks.
President Bush issues a sharp warning to Russia on the Lithuania situation - and
protests the expulsion order against tow American diplomats from Vilnius, the
Lithuanian capital.
Joseph Hazelwood , the tanker skipper in the Exxon
Valdez oil spill accident is acquitted on three charges - and
that was for the negligent discharge of oil. He had been
accused of being drunk, reckless and most responsible for
the oil spill.
President Bush declared a disaster in the state of Alabama
and ordered federal recovery aid because of damage
caused by severe storms and flooding.
A fast moving fire sweeps through the Happy land social club in the Bronx -
killing 87. An employee’s ex-boyfriend is arrested on arson charges.
Lithuania assures President Mikhail S. Gorbachev that the breakaway republic is
not forming paramilitary units.
The FDA approves the first genetically engineered product for human
consumption.
The FDA approves a new drug for so-called “Bubble Boy Disease” and it’s called
PEG-ADA and manufactured by Enson
Inc.
