Edwin Meese III asks for the appointment of a special
prosecutor to make a “rapid, impartial and thorough”
investigation of the charges of political and financial
improprieties that jeopardize his prospect of becoming
attorney general.
Robert Diaz, a coronary care nurse in Riverside County (CA)
is found guilty of murdering 12 elderly patients by giving them
overdoses of a heart-regulating drug.
A spring storm kills at least 70 in the Northeast and the Carolinas.
President Reagan is not happy over a new Democratic TV campaign that
charges that his Administration contains “more scandal-tainted officials tan we’ve
seen since Richard Nixon and Watergate.” He called the attack “guilt by
accusation.’
New England loves Hart - Gary Hart defeats Walter F. Mondale in the
Connecticut primary - his sixth New England state.
Congress hands President Regan the fourth veto override of his Administration,
approving a $180-million program for water research grants over the President’s
objections.
Medical - Forty cases of AIDS in 10 cities have been linked through a chain of
sexual contacts to one homosexual man who may have bee a carrier of the
disease without knowing he had it.
Virginia McMartin (76) who owns the Virginia
McMartin Pre-School near Los Angeles and one of her
former teachers are named as two of seven school
employees indicted on charges of sexually molesting
children in their care.
Technology - There’s a shift as VCR’s appear to be
making the transition from specialty item to mass-
market appliance.
Since the breakup of AT&T Jan. 1, there are more than

90 million phone credit cards - much more than before and phone card fraud is
increasing. AT&T began issuing credit cards in 1939.
IBM’s PCjr and Apple Computer’s
Macintosh computers have drawn similar
reactions in many places since they hit the
market two months ago Watchers say that
while the Mac seems destined to become a
hit, PCjr sales so far have been
disappointing - in part because of the new
Apple.
Media - For the first time since 1979, Turner
Broadcasting system has posted a profit -
gaining a $7 million profit. Turner says he’ll
dip back into the red until midyear, but it’s
the light at the end of the tunnel. His WTBS
is the strongest property - now reaching 29
million homes. CNN now reaches over 25
million and CNN Headline News is gaining.
Music news -
“Thriller” breaks the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack album for all-time
bestseller. As “Saturday” had 25 million in sales, so far, “Thriller” by Michael
Jackson has almost 31 million sales.

Radio news -
Leases 4 channels Westwood One becomes the first independent radio producer
to lease digital audio channels on RCA’s Satcom 1-R communications satellite
under a $6.7 million multi-year pact. Westwood says it will re-sale some down
time to independent producers.
Mike Joseph just licensed “Hot Hits” to Z-100 New York.
Kevin Metheny is leaving as program director of WNBC to
go to MTV. “I would not have left if I felt the station was in
peril. I’m comfortable that our advertisers, our programming
and our current lineup are well positioned. It looks bright and
cheery. Metheny joined WNBC in 1980 as program manager
and was upped to director of programming and operations in
1982. Before WNBC, he programmed WNOE, New Orleans,
KMJC, San Diego, WXKX, Pittsburgh, WEFM Chicago and
KSLQ St. Louis.
Storz Broadcasting sells legendary WTIX (New Orleans) and KOMA (Oklahoma
City) to Price Communications.
WXTU Philadelphia goes country.
Over 170 radio stations carry the comedy feature
“Hiney Wine.” It’s marketed by Dorsey and Donnelly
enterprises of Arlington, Texas. Rick Dees uses it on
KIIS-FM as does Scott Shannon on Z-100. The
feature is sold on a cash basis between $1,500 and
$10,000 a year. Stations can make a lot of money and
especially if they follow “The Hiney Wine Operations Manual.” The booklet
instructs programmers on the art of selling Hiney T-shirts, bumper stickers, fly
swatters, drinking mugs and baseball caps among others.
The FCC begins implementation of one of the most sweeping changes in the
history of broadcasting and will add more than 600 new FM stations to the dial.
Also, the FCC gives nearly 200 daytime only AM stations special pre-sunrise
authorization. The authorizations were mailed to AM stations that operate on one
of the seven channels designated as “Canadian clear channels. They are - 540,
690,740,860,990,1010 and 1570 khz.

Metromedia sells KJR-AM Seattle to Ackerly Inc for $6 million. Metromedia
purchased the station in 1980 for $10 million. KJR was a top-40
powerhouse
during the late 1950’s 1960’s and 1970’s when it was owned by Kaye-Smith
Broadcasting.
