President Bush and the leaders of Britain
and Spain say they would give the United
Nations until the end of today to
authorize the use of military force against
Iraq or they would go to war without U.N.
approval.
President Bush puts the nation and the
world on a war footing, issuing an
ultimatum to Saddam Hussein to step
down within 48 hours or face sure
destruction “at a time of our choosing.”

President Bush’s ultimatum to relinquish
power and flee Iraq.
U.S. attacks Iraq - Air raid sirens blared
and yellow-and-white tracers could be
seen across the city of Baghdad.
US. And British troops sweep into southern Iraq in an invasion aimed at
Baghdad, where a new wave of missiles and bombs struck a presidential
compound housing several government departments of Saddam Hussein.
The United States launches an intense assault against Iraq, raining hundreds of
bombs and cruise missiles on the capital and other places deemed crucial to
President Saddam Hussein’s regime.
High Tech - Computer manufacturer Gateway Inc says it
will eliminate 1,900 jobs and close 80 retail stores by the
end of this month. The company lost $309 million last year
on sales of $4.2 billion.
Hollywood news - Angelina
Jolie’s gown, the one she is supposed to wear to the
Academy Awards is stolen from the car of British
designer Scott Henshall. The $4700 gown was among
seven dresses, jewelry and accessories worth a total of
$62,400 clipped from the back of the designer’s

Television news - Fox announces that it has signed
Monica Lewinsky, former Clinton White House intern
to be the host of “Mr. Personality,” a staged
unscripted prime-time series. The show premieres
April 21.
Nickelodeon unveils “
All
Grown Up
,” a spin-off from
“Rugrats” that lets us know
what they are like as
adolescents. It should start soon.
“The Sopranos” will continue. James Gandolfini, who
had sued HBO to get out of his contract in a dispute over
his salary, has agreed to drop his lawsuit and go back to
work.
War coverage - Peter Arnett and NBC jump on the
competition in the opening salvos of the U.S. led attack.
NBC was the first with a report that something was
happening in Baghdad, with ABC just minutes behind.
HDTV update - ESPN will launch ESPN HD on March 30 - the first channel
dedicated to the new technology. Like CBS sports, ESPN has been producing
certain sports broadcasts in HD. Less than 5% of U.S. homes have digital sets
necessary to display HDTV.
