four days. Much of it has to do with the downgrading of 19 Japanese banks, due
to a myriad of bad loans.
Saudi commandos burst through the doors and windows of a hijacked Russian
jetliner as it sat on the runway in the city of Medina. More than 100 passengers
are freed, but three are dead - a flight attendant, a passenger and a teenage
terrorist.
The Federal Reserve cuts short-term interest rates to 5% - from 5 1/2 %. It’s the
third half-point reduction of the year.
The California Zephyr , heading from
Chicago to Emeryville California derails in
Brooks Iowa, killing one and injuring 90.
The population of New York City hits 8
million - the highest population in its more
than three-century history. The exact number

High Tech - Real Networks says it plans to
expand its fledgling games Web site into a
comprehensive service for game developers, making a wide selection of their
works available to consumers for downloading or playing online.
Recently, hundreds of thousands of e-mails sent by Earthlink customers to AOL
accounts were rejected and lost over at least 10 days. The companies say now it
is resolved, and initially, AOL said software designed to prevent spam was at
fault.

MTV and VH1 simultaneously debut Madonna’s latest video “What It Feels Like
For A Girl.” The reason - they deem it too violent for repeated airings.
Rapper Sean “Puffy” Combs is acquitted of weapon possession and attempted
bribery charges in a case stemming from a 1999 shooting at a crowded
Manhattan dance club. “I am just so grateful today. I feel blessed. Right now, I
just want to go and be with my kids,” said Combs.
K-Ci of K-Ci & Jojo is charged with 23 counts of
indecent exposure and one count of lewd conduct for
allegedly exposing himself at a KIIS-FM (Los Angeles)
Jingle Ball concert in December. The singer was
performing when he allegedly pulled down his trousers
and underwear, exposing himself to the 4,000-member
audience.
