The United States presents to the Soviet Union a touch permanent monitoring
plan to guard against violations of a proposed treaty to eliminate medium-range
nuclear missiles.
Near Chicago - Two depressed young women kill themselves by filling a garage
with auto exhaust. This follows the suicide death of four teens in New Jersey,
who died the same way.
Britain’s Prince Charles flies over the site of
Europe’s worst peacetime maritime disaster,
saying his country owes a debt of gratitude to
Belgium for its rescue operation after a British ferry
capsized in the North Sea. The disaster claimed
134 lives. 534 were aboard, mostly British
passengers.
Chrysler Corp, the nation’s third largest
automaker, announces an agreement to buy
Renault’s interest in ailing American Motors Corp
and all outstanding AMC stock for $757 million.
Sports - The NFL announces a new three-year television contract what will
include a package of games on cable’s ESPN - the first time it has reached out
to cable-TV. ESPN, will televise eight Sunday night games, four exhibition games
and the Pro Bowl, When ESPN televises a game, it still will be available via over
the air TV in the visiting team’s market and I the home team’s market if the game
is sold out 72 hours in advance. The Super Bowl will continue on a rotating basis
among the networks in the order of ABC, NBC and CBS. CBS and NBC will
retain their rights to Sunday afternoon telecasts
and ABC will retain “Monday Night Football.”

coach Woody Hayes . He was 74.
AZT, the first AIDS drug expected to be
licensed, could cost patients up to $10,000 a
year.

WBA heavyweight crown - In Las Vegas - Mike Tyson defeats James
(Bonecrusher) Smith by decision.
Music news -
Ousted - William Lee Golden - the one with the
baritone and beard, is asked to leave the successful
“Oak Ridge Boys” after 22 years.
MTV Saturday night - Los Lobos in concert.
MTV debuts a series of anti-drug spots - a
campaign called Rock Against Drugs.
An inventory of music found stashed in a warehouse
has revealed unpublished songs by George
Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers and
others, some handwritten by the composers. With
the advent of sound films in the 1920’s, Warner
Bros. Bought several music publishing houses,
acquiring the material that was shunted from various
offices and warehouses before ending up in Secaucus. The 80 cartons were
discovered in 1982, but remained largely uninventoried. They were moved to a
vault in Manhattan. Since 1985, a team of music theater scholars has poured
over the material.
In Palm Beach, Yoko Ono unveils a collection oaf art by John Lennon, but
refused to donate proceeds to the poor because it would make his work, “a
charity case.” The exhibition works are on sale for prices from $20 to $36,000.
“I’m proud of him for these works. He had a burning desire of being accepted and
appreciated as an artist. He was a sort of renaissance man before his time” said
Ono.
Roger Hedgecock , the former mayor of san Diego who was
convicted in 1985 on conspiracy and perjury charges
stemming from illegal contributions to his 1983 mayoral
campaign has formed a rock band - “The Arnold/Hedgecock
Experience”in San Diego. They recently opened for the
Tubes.
Television news -
CBS lays off more than 200 news employees. It was the first
major move by new CBS boss Laurence Tisch.
