The Soviet press appeals for unity after the death of
Premier Stalin . The regime of Georgi Malenkov is
acting swiftly to assure security after shift of power.
“Intensity of Grief” - Moscow radio begins relaying a
description of the funeral of Joseph Stalin, broadcast
from the Hall of Columns on Red Square, where
Stalin’s body has been lying in state.
In Moscow - The body of Joseph Stalin is laid beside
Lenon as the communist world morns the death of the
premier.
Premier Georgi Malenkov hints in a peace plea, that
he would view favorably a meeting with President
Eisenhower.
In a Gallup poll, few believe that Stalin’s death has
improved the chances for world peace.
Two Soviet MIG jets shoot down a four-engine British
bomber after a swift foray above the Elbe River Valley
at the east-west frontier of Germany. The Russians
claim the plane opened fire first.
Two Mig-15’s roar out of Czechoslovakia and shoot down an American F-84
Thunderjet on routine patrol over the U.S. zone of Germany. The pilot emerged
with only scratches as he parachuted into Bavarian woods.
President Eisenhower awards his first Medal
of Honor. This one went to Cpl Duane E.
Dewey , who flung himself on an enemy hand
grenade and smothered its explosion in Korea.
Making the presentation, President Eisenhower
told the Marine: “You must have a body of
steel.”

Mrs. Winthrop (Bobo) Rockefeller , the Cinderella bride
of Winthrop Rockefeller (married in 1948), says she has
received no support money from her estranged husband
for a year. Bob and her son, Winthrop Jr., (4 ½) have
been living frugally at a farm home near Lowell Indiana
since 1950.
Hollywood - Former husband of Jane Froman testifies that the singer was madly;
violently in love with him before a near-fatal airplane crash switched her
affections to the flier/pilot who rescued her. Actor Donald Ross is suing Pan Am
Airways for $100,000 for the loss of Ms. Froman’s affections. He says in his suit,
that had it not been for the crash that injured her critically, he and Ms. Froman
would have continued their “Idyllic” home life. The crash occurred near Lisbon,
Portugal on February 23, 1943. The pilot, John Burn, pulled Ms. Froman from the
river and later married her.
Warner Brothers is offering a new sound
system, which the studio says is the
result of nearly 30 years’ of research.
House of Wax ” will be the first picture to
introduce “WarnerPhonic Sound.” The
system is formed by a series of sound
tracks in addition to the original basic
sound track which accompanies a
picture. The Paramount Theater in New
York City where “House of Wax” will be
presented in a world premiere April 10 is
installing some 25 special speakers to
achieve the best possible value from the expanded sound system. Also, “House
of Wax” is a 3D movie, so this premiere should be one-of-a-kind.
Television news - Arthur Godfrey is going to take a leave from his video and
radio shows in April to undergo a hip surgery. He expects to be out 5 to 6 weeks.

Humorist, cartoonist Al Capp is signed to make a once-a-
week appearance on NBC-TV’s “Today show.” Mr. Capp
will offer commentaries on modern life, complete with his
own cartoon illustrations. He’ll appear on Mondays
beginning March 16.
Ralph Edwards, producer of TV’s “This Is Your Life”
cancels an upcoming show dedicated to Ann Sheridan,
because someone leaked the surprise to the actress. It
marks the first time since the program went on television
last October that the scheduled subject has had any hint of
things to come. Edwards says he would not stage a show where the subject
wasn’t completely surprised.

Radio news - Eva Gabor takes a shot at being a disk
jockey. She can be heard Mid-2am over WABC radio
New York. Dial 770. For her fist night, Walter Winchell
joined her in-studio. He was there to inaugurate her
radio career and to promote a charity show at Madison
Square Garden next week. Also appearing - Dagmar
and Pat O’Brien.
Music news - Fired? The all-female “Chordettes”vocal
group will no longer appear on Arthur Godfrey’s TV or radio shows. What
happened?
