President Reagan decides to impose no immediate new economic sanctions
against Panama, even though he has denounced the regime of Gen. Manual A.
Noriega for deposing Panama’s civilian president and aiding international drug
trafficking.
The House votes to restore broad civil rights protections narrowed by a 1984
U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Under the legislation, the government must withhold
all federal funds from a private or public institution if any of its agencies are found
guilty of discrimination on the grounds of race, age, sex or disability.
South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu and dozens
of other South African religious leaders are arrested in Cape
Town on as they attempted to march to Parliament to protest the
government’s latest ban on anti-apartheid activities.
The senate votes to ban most uses of lie detectors in job
interviews.
Gov. Michael S. Dukakis and Vice President George Bush win Vermont’s non-
binding presidential primary.
Pat Robertson wins a one-sided preference poll victory in
Alaska’s Republican caucuses.
Turnaround - The House defeats a $30-million non-military aid
package for the Nicaraguan Contras.
Bank holiday - Panama, which has developed into a major
Caribbean banking center, shuts down its banks because of
pressures from the United States and foes of Gen. Noriega.
George Bush wins the South Carolina Republican presidential primary.
At least eight are dead in bloody anti-Chinese rioting in the Tibetan capital of
Lhasa.
The federal government and Morton Thiokol Inc, bring annuities for $7.735
million to settle the claims by survivors of four of the astronauts who died aboard
the space shuttle Challenger.

Arab guerrillas in southern Israel hijack a passenger bus and hold it three hours
before Israeli troops stormed it, killing three gunmen, Three Israeli civilians also
were killed and nine wounded.
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan tells
Congress that it should consider trimming Social Security
and other entitlement programs as it searches for ways to
reduce the federal budge deficit.
Jesse Jackson opens his final campaign before super
Tuesday’s caucuses and primaries and visits AIDS
victims in Dallas and said it is time “for the scare tactics
to stop.”
Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart returns to TV this week and tells his followers that he
would tell them someday about the unspecified sin to which he confessed two
weeks earlier. He said that he was eager to tell the whole story, not just what has
been given in news reports and that he will do so when the time is right.
The nation’s unemployment rate drops to 5.6%.
Federated Department Stores Inc. announces that its board has accepted a
multibillion-dollar acquisition bid for Macy’s - but competitor Campeau vows to
fight on for the purchase of R.H. Macy.

going full swing. The 29-city concert tour,
notable for avoiding Las Vegas and Atlantic
City, begins March 13 at the Oakland
Coliseum and ends its spring leg April 9 at Radio City Music Hall.
Passing - Joe Besser , best known as one of the (later) Three
Stooges and his for appearances on the old “Abbot and
Costello” TV show. He was 80.

Performing at a concert in Worchester (MA) - Bruce Springsteen misses some of
the lyrics on “Born to Run.” When he came out for an encore at the second show
of his new U.S. tour, Springsteen forgot the words of the opening line, stopping
after “The day we…” After joking with the audience, he began again and got it.
Springsteen later said the song has assumed a new meaning to him over the
years.
Television news - Two jobs. Garry Shandling has
“It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” on Showtime, but this
week, Fox will re-run those shows. Also, Shandling is
Johnny Carson’s stand-in on “The Tonight Show” on
NBC-TV.
Radio news -
Making a live appearance on Rick Dees’ popular LA
morning show on KIIS-FM, John Denver sang “The
Ballad of Gary Hart.” - a satirical song written by singer
Tom Paxton. “He met her at a party. Her name was Donna Rice. She was Gary’s
kind of woman. She was pure Miami Vice.”
Music news - George Harrison and Ringo Starr appear on a British TV talk
show, and say they are friends. Harrison scoffed at the notion that he and Paul
McCartney were feuding.

Bon Jovi is taping a pair of Fuji Film TV
commercials which will air in Japan.
Ike Turner surrenders to a Pasadena court
on a week-old warrant that sought his arrest
because he failed to appear in court to face
cocaine charges.
