Eight day state visit - President Nixon flies to NY to express “apologies and
regret” to French President Georges Pompidou
for the strong protests he has encountered on
his visit in the U.S. He was angered by
demonstrations on his visit to Chicago.
Vice President Agnew condemns the attack by
a white mob on buses carrying Negro children
to a once-white school in Lamar, S.C. Several
children were slightly injured. He said the
Administration “does not condone and will not
tolerate violence resulting from the lawful
desegregation of schools anywhere.”
President Nixon reports that U.S. air operations
over Laos, are part of a determined, but
carefully limited effort to bring peace to the
troubled land. So far, the operations have lead
to the loss of 400 airmen in 400 aircraft.
After White House prodding - Plans to withdraw
up to 70,000 additional troops from Vietnam
between April and September have been
approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals overruled Dist. Judge Julius Hoffman
and granted them bail.
Patrick Nugent, the former Luci Johnson’s
husband, has left his job in the Johnson
family’s broadcasting company in Austin and
now is a San Antonio businessman as
president of Athletic Repair & Manufacturing
Co. He drives 75 miles from his and Luci’s
home in Austin to San Antonio every day.
General Motors modifies its call for lead-free
gasoline, and suggests a low-lead content
grade be permitted until the 1975 model year.

burden on the oil industry and reduce cost to consumers, yet permit auto
companies to meet 1972, 1973 and 1974 emission standards.
Manson update - Charles Manson meet with Susan Atkins. Acting as his own
attorney, Manson was given permission by the court to interview the other five
defendants including her, to assist him in preparing his defense, provided they
and their attorneys consented.
The FDA will require makers of oral contraceptives to warn the 8 ½ million
American users of possible health hazards from the pill with a simply worded
leaflet to be included in each package.
NASA says it was taking no chances that the Apollo 13 astronauts next month
will be menaced either by man-made lightening or moon-made germs. Apollo 12
took off last November and was hit by two electrical discharges.
Freckles - the dog of Robert F. Kennedy’s family - is safe back home after being
lost for two days.

Gets mad - Jerry Quarry gets decked after the first-round bell, then smashes
Rufus Brassell with a left hook and KO’d the once beaten heavyweight in the
second round of a scheduled 10-rounder in Miami.
The FBI announces that it has arrested a suspect in the case of the telephoned
threat against the life of Chicago Cubs vet Ernie Banks. He was Lawrence
Bankhead (21) of Chicago.
