Armed Soviet paratroopers break into a psychiatric hospital in Vilnius to arrest 20
army deserters who had taken shelter after Lithuania declared its independence
several weeks ago from the Soviet Union.
The Savings and Loan industry, battered by losses in junk bonds and real estate,
lost $6.5 billion in the fourth quarter and $19.2 billion, the worst loss ever for the
industry.
President Bush proclaims the government “on a wartime footing to find a cure for
AIDS” and urges an end to discrimination against AIDS sufferers in the
workplace. “... Tonight like every night, the lights will burn late in Bethesda and
Atlanta as a group of American pioneers work to solve this problem. If they do - I
should say, when they do - it will be one of the greatest things our nation could
do for the world.”
The Sandinista government agrees to give full control of the armed forces to
President-elect Violeta Barrios de Chamorro when she takes office April 25. The
accord will allow her to cut the army’s ranks.
AT&T enters the credit card market this week with
its “Universal Card.” It’s a combination calling card
and credit card that will give customers a host of
free services, including buyer, rental car insurance
and warranty extensions on products purchased
with the card. The company says customers who get the card this year and
continue to use it at least once a year will not be charged annual fees.

After 26 years - this is the last for John Palmer at NBC
news. He is set to host a new syndicated series “Only
Thursday” for King World.
“TV Marti” begins transmissions from Florida to Cuba
this week. Cuban officials blocked the transmission after 38 minutes and accused
the U.S. of engaging in aggressive activity. TV - channel 13 could clearly be seen
in the Havana area until the jamming began. The station is designed to be a TV

version of Radio Marti, which has provided news
and entertainment to Cuba since 1985. The channel
13 signal is beamed from a balloon, dangling 10,000
feet above Cudjoe Key off the South Florida Coast.
Television sports - CBS fires Brent Musburger. He’ll
do his last NCAA championship broadcast this week.
On ABC’s “Good Morning America” - Joan Lunden conducts
in interview with “Predator II” actor/musician Ruben Blades ,
when his movie director, Stephen Hopkins, abruptly yanked
the earplug from his ear and ordered him back on the movie
set - live. Later, Hopkins issued an apology saying
“Sometimes I get a bit carried away. Unfortunately, I
interrupted your interview and I apologize for that. And I kind
of humiliated Ruben, too, on national television, which is kind
of a dumb thing to do.”

DJ Hal Jackson are named to the National Assn of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
Professor Griff of the rap group “Public Enemy”
leaves the group to concentrate on a solo career.

Trends in modeling - agencies say that demands for
female models over 40 years old are their fastest growing
segment due to aging baby boomers. Older models can
wear almost any clothes - “except swimsuits,” says one
agency. “A younger body simply looks better in them.
Forty-five-year-old flesh doesn’t look like 25 to30-year-old
flesh.”
Disney getting into the restaurant business? - The
company announces it will open its first fast-food restaurant April 21 in Southern
California. Alongside the restaurant, the company will open one of its Disney
Stores. A Disney source says the restaurant concept will be rolled out slowly.

because his is getting too old to keep ignoring his
health. “Yea, I’ve cleaned up my act a little bit.

Scoop for Connie Chung - she’ll be interviewing
Joseph Hazelwood, the man who captained the oil tanker
Exxon Valdez - the tanker involved in one of the worst oil
spills in U.S. history. The segment will be broadcast this
week on “Saturday Night With Connie Chung.”
Hazelwood has granted no media interviews until now.
Lucasfilm Inc files a $300 million trademark infringement
suit against Luke Sky walker of the group 2 Live Crew.
The suit says the lead singer has tarnished the image of the “Star Wars”
character that bears a similar name.
NBC debuts a new comedy starring Robert Mitchum this Saturday - “A Family
For Joe.” He portrays a homeless man who poses as grandfather to four orphans
to keep them together. Carol Burnette gets a shot at a series. Her “Carol &
Company” will air the same night.
The Rev Jessie Jackson is set to debut his own TV talk show “Voices of America
with Jesse Jackson” in September. The politics-oriented show has at least one
station signed - WBAL-TV in Baltimore.
Janet Jackson’s new single “Alright”
debuts on MTV this week and you can
now buy it in stores.
Thomas DeBarge of the Debarge family
band is sentenced to 2 1/2 to 20 years in
prison on a charge of possession with
intent to deliver cocaine. It was his
second cocaine-related conviction in four
years.
