Mikhail S. Gorbachev is elected as the Soviet Union’s first executive president.
The win gives him powers to pursue broader reforms.
In an NPR interview,
President Bush
says he did not
know whether the fire at a Libyan factory suspected of
producing chemical weapons was caused by sabotage or
accident, but that he is not sorry it happened. President
Kadafi and other Libyan officials have accused the United
States, Israel and West Germany of responsibility for the
fire.
Concerned about the area’s troop movements, the Bush
Administration warns Moscow against creating an “atmosphere of intimidation
and increasing tension” in Lithuania.
Newly elected political leaders in East Germany begin a search for a coalition
government and it’s said that one of its first acts will be the demolition of the
Berlin Wall.
Northwest Airlines fires three pilots accused of flying while legally intoxicated.
Each of the pilots on flight from Fargo, ND on March 8 had blood-alcohol levels
exceeding .04%, a violation of federal regulations.
Baseball - Players and owners end a 32-day spring lockout and agree to a four-
year contract. The baseball season will begin April 9.
Entertainment news - Lou Diamond Phillips suffers a broken arm in a riding
accident while filming “Young Guns 2.”
MCA Inc says it will buy Geffen Records for MCA stock valued at $545 million.
David Geffen (47) is the sole stockholder of the company. He’ll remain as head of
the label.

(57) - jumped to
death from her eighth floor apartment in Lausanne,
Switzerland.
“A Chorus Line” extends its Broadway run another month,
after an extensive ticket run announcing its closing March
31. The show has been running almost 15 years at the
Shubert Theatre. Producer Joseph Papp, whose nonprofit

Tom Harmon
(70) dies of a heart attack
after playing a round of golf. Harmon is best-known
for winning the 1940 Heisman Trophy while
attending the University of Michigan. He was also
known for his sports broadcasting work through the
1960’s. His oldest daughter, Kristen, was married to
Rick Nelson; daughter Kelly was a model and son
Mark, is an actor. Granddaughter Tracy stars in
ABC-TV’s “Father Dowling Mysteries.”
Television news - “Elvis” the series about the early
life of Elvis Presley, is put on hiatus by ABC. The
network says it will return later this season.
Al Michaels
, the best sports announcer at ABC, gets reprimanded by
his boss - Dennis Swanson. Seems that Michaels’ teen daughter,
Jennifer, worked as a messenger for the network at the U.S. Figure
Skating Championships in Salt Lake City, but ABC has a policy against
nepotism. She was getting paid $50 a week. Michaels is facing a few
weeks of suspension. He
reportedly makes $1.5
million a year at ABC.

Arledge as head of ABC Sports in
January 1986.

Scott Shannon who steers the ship at “Pirate Radio” Los Angeles says, “We’re
not as successful as I want to be. Be we are successful. The station celebrates
its first anniversary this week with a six-hour live morning show broadcast and
party featuring Warrant, L.A. Guns and Dangerous Toys. Shannon says main
competitor KIIS-FM “did a really good job after our initial blastoff of solidifying
what they had. There was a definite point then their philosophy changed and they
made a decision to quit defending against Pirate and worry about their own
product.’
Music news - (Miami) Janet Jackson kicks-off her “Rhythm Nation” tour - her
first ever concert tour.
Gloria Estefan
(32) suffers a broken vertebra when a
truck ran into her band’s bus on a snow-covered highway
in the Pocono Mountains. Ms. Estefan and five other
members of the Miami Sound Machine were taken to a
hospital in Scranton (PA). They had just met with President
Bush at the White House, and were en route to a concert
in Syracuse.
