Vienna - President Carter and Soviet President Leonid I. Brezhnev meet for the
first time in a superpower summit aimed at curbing the spiraling nuclear arms
race.
Iran - The revolutionary government nationalizes all banks - seizing control o 27
major commercial banks.
The Supreme Court rules that handicapped people have no legal right to attend a
school if they cannot meet the school’s physical qualifications.
Continued flap - “I’m sure the President must have been misquoted,” Sen.
Edward Kennedy says. “I think what he meant to say was that he was going to
whip inflation.’ That’s not what others heard the President say - and he said it
twice: “If Kennedy runs, I’ll whip his ass.” Carter made the comment to a group of
congressmen at a White House dinner.

the 1980 Republican presidential nomination with a
“Middle Western strategy” and a call for restoration of
“that vital center that can blind our nation and society
together.”
Malaysia announces it will adopt a “shoot on sight”
policy to stop the influx of Vietnamese refugees and
said it would evict 76,000 boat people already in it
settlement camps.
Files with the Supreme Court - Madalyn Murray
O’Hair, who won the 1963 Supreme Court case
banning mandatory prayers and Bible reading in public
schools, now wants the words “In God We Trust” removed from all U.S. coins
and currency.
White House consumer adviser Esther Peterson apologizes to President Carter
for the behavior of consumer advocates when they met with him on the energy
crisis last week.
John Mulligan, Thomas Murray and Ed Colombani - all of New York City - are
charged today with plotting to settle a $2 million payroll shipment from a Brink’s
armored car at LaGuardia Airport. What’s interesting is that Mulligan and
Colombani taught actor Peter Falk to pick locks and burn through safes for his
role in “The Brinks Job.”

The FAA orders part of the nation’s DC-10 fleet grounded once again for further
inspections.
Wholesale price rose only .4% in May less than half the .9% in April.
John F. Kennedy Jr. (18) graduates from Andover Academy and will enter Brown
University in the fall.
Queens - The right hand of a 17-year-old girl on her way to school was severed
by a subway wheel when she was pushed in front of the train. The girl - Renee
Katz is described by High School of Music and Art officials as “brilliant” and a
“fine musician.” Transit police packed the hand in ice and rushed it and the girl to
Bellevue.
13-year-old Katie Kerwin of Denver correctly spelled “virescence” and
“maculature” to win the 52
nd
annual National Spelling Bee.
Monroe, La - “Mr. Wonder” who conducts a kid’s show over KNOE-TV is sought
by Louisiana authorities on two warrants for his arrest in the molesting of at least
six young boys.
Sports -
Sparky Anderson who was fired from the Cincinnati Reds last winter, agrees to a
five-year contract with the Detroit Tigers for a reported $125,000 a year.

Houston Astros defeat the New
York Mets - 5-0 in New York.
Chris Evert-Lloyd crushes Wendy
Turnbull of Australia to win the
women’s singles title at the French
Open tennis championships in
Paris. She was worried that she
had done anything spectacular this
year - but not do worry now.
The NBA approves the transfer of the new Orleans Jazz to Salt Lake City. NBA
commissioner Lawrence O’Brien said the franchise would be realigned within the
leagues’ Midwest Division with the Indiana pacers shifting to the Central Division.

The Boston Celtics announce the signing of Larry Bird to a five-year contract
worth more than $3.2 million. That makes him the highest paid rookie in pro-
sports history (so far).
Music news -
The Rev. Clarence L. Franklin (63) - father of Aretha Franklin is in critical
condition after being shot twice during an apparent robbery break-in at his home.
He is the pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit.
Kenny Rogers is named male vocalist of the year and shared duet of the year
honors with Dottie West at the Music City News Cover Awards show in Nashville.
Barbara Mandrell received female artist of the year. The Statler Brothers won
their sixth straight group of the year award and received top album honors for
“Entertainers On and Off the Road.”

Goodbye Duke - John Wayne, the
biggest movie star of all time - dies of
cancer at the age of 72.

Jack Haley (80) - best known as the Tin
Woodman in “The Wizard of Oz.” His last
public appearance was with scarecrow
Ray Bolger last April 9 when they
presented an Academy Award at the
Oscar’s ceremony.
Actress Linda Blair pleads guilty in
Jacksonville to a federal misdemeanor
charge of conspiracy to possess cocaine.

stars of “Our Gang/Little Rascals.”
Television news -
Motion picture and television producers have charged that the cable industry
unfairly plucks their offerings out of the air for sale to cable subscribers. “It’s a
legalized rip-of,” said Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Assn. of
America. Testifying in front of a Senate Commerce Committee, Valenti said cable
TV takes in nearly $1.5 billion a year but pays less than 1% of its revenue for
programs it “plucks out of the air” without the permission of the owners without a
negotiating price.

Also testifying - baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn says that cable’s freedom to
pick-up distant games for rebroadcast cuts deeply into ticket sales for major
league home games.
