Prime Minister Winston Churchill is told by a doctor to
get a complete rest of at least a month, thereby forcing
the Big Three to postpone their Bermuda conference.
Korean conflict - The Chinese Communist army pours
out an artillery barrage and slams more than 12,000
troops into the western front north of Seoul in an
unusual broad daylight attack on a two-mile-wide front.
The city of Yuma, Ariz (population 20,000) runs out of
water in 115-degree heat after a break in a water main
kept the city from replenishing the water in the
reservoir tank. Warnings were broadcast to turn off all swamp coolers because
some equipment could cause a fire hazard unless supplied with water.
A Gallup Poll asks - “If you had a daughter who was getting married and cost
didn’t matter, would you personally prefer that she have a large church wedding,
a small church wedding or that she be married at home?” - 42% favored a small
church, 24% large church and 22% - at home.
Sports - Yankees are in a slump as they lose their 6th straight. Not since 1945
when the Yanks dropped nine in a row has the club lost as many as six. Mickey
Mantle seems to be in a batting slump. His average as of this week is .200.
Car news - Chevrolet debuts the
Corvette” - a plastic body sports car.
The auto will have a factory list price of
$3498 with automatic transmission as
standard equipment. The Corvette is a
two-seater, 33 inches high, 70 inches
wide, 167 inches long on a 102-inch
wheelbase and has a curb weight of
2900 pounds. Chevrolet plans to build
300 of the Corvettes this year and will
eventually increase this to 1000 units monthly. The car is being built on a special
assembly line in a temporary building in Flint, Mich. 1953 options include a
heater for $91.40 and AM (signal seeking) radio for $145.15. All models are
equipped with tube-type whitewall tires. The 1953 models come in polo-white
with black soft-top and red interior.

Movie news - Walt Disney Productions announces that it will produce
both live-action and animated films in the new 20th Century-Fox
three-dimensional process CinemaScope. After seeing test shots, Disney says
he is intrigued by the photographic possibilities of shooting the Jules Verne
classic “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” in CinemaScope. Disney said he is also
contemplating projection of his “Fantasia” in CinemaScope as well.
Hollywood news - Scores of fans
watch as Marilyn Monroe and Jane
Russell put signatures, hand and
foot prints in the cement at
Grauman’s Chinese Theater in
Hollywood. Danny Thomas aided in
the production.
Divorces - Betty Wynn (27) becomes
the latest ex-wife of actor Keenan
Wynn (34).
Betty Grable and 20th Century-Fox
amicably agree to the cancellation of her contract. Miss Grable has been under
contract to the studio since 1936.
Television news - Lassie - the former MGM movie dog is set to star in a weekly
television series, to be co produced by Hollywood’s Robert Maxwell Associates
and the All-Canada Radio Facilities. The
deal gives the Canadian group distribution
rights above the border.
She’s hot - Dorothy Collins (24) - seen
each week on “Your Hit Parade” gets a lot of
fan mail. She was born in Canada (real
name: Marjorie Chandler). The show is
sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes.

In New York - a crazed unemployed shipping clerk, bursts onto the stage of the
television show “City Hospital” at CBS, stabs a cameraman twice and breaks a
water pitcher over the head of one of the actors. The show, set to air live at 9pm,
was cancelled. Everyone should be OK.
