Glenn Robinette - a former CIA operative testifies that White House aid Oliver
North wrote and backdated phony letters last year to try to cover up the fact that
a $16 thousand security system installed at his home had been paid for by Maj.
Gen. Richard Secord. He’s the one who managed the proceeds from the Iran
arms sales.
P. David Herringer of Capital Management Corp makes a bogus $6.8 billion
buyout bid for Dayton Hudson Corp - setting off wild gyrations in the company’s
stock price. He was fired then taken for a medical examination.
The American Medical Association adopts its first comprehensive report on AIDS
and calls for more leadership in dealing with the epidemic and a cautious
approach to screening anyone with the virus. The AMA will also begin an
information program, endorsing the use of condoms as one useful measure to
contain the spread of AIDS.
Seeking to cash in on the popularity of
the
Suzuki Samurai
utility vehicle
among college students and other young
buyers. - General Motors plans to sell a
slightly larger version of the Samurai
beginning next year. GM’s version will be
called the Chevrolet Tracker. Right now,
the Samurai’s base price is $7,495.
Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell
quits after 15 years, setting the stage for conservatives to gain a clear majority on
the high court.
In his weekly radio address - President Reagan
took a jab at the Iran-contra hearings, referring
to them as “sideshows and hoopla. “With all the
sideshows and hoopla in Washington these
days, you may sometimes wonder if anyone’s
paying attention to what really matters. Keeping
inflation, unemployment and your taxes down
and growth up and getting control of our federal
deficit so the economy will stay health - these
are among Washington’s most important jobs... the good news is that our
economy is strong and getting stronger.”

President Reagan has several non-cancerous polyps removed from his colon.
They were discovered during a semiannual medical examination. The president
“feels great.”
Senator
Albert Gore Jr
. (39) of Tennessee enters the
race for President this week. He says he is seeking the
1988 Democratic nomination “to restore the rule of law
and respect for common sense to the White House.”
Arkansas Gov Bill Clinton has promised an
announcement of his plans soon. Another southerner,
Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia is under intense pressure to
declare his intentions as well.
Actor Sean Penn (26) is sentenced to 60 days in jail for
reckless driving and for punching an extra on the set of
his latest movie. He is ordered to bring a toothbrush and overnight case on his
surrender date of July 7.
Chrysler Corp and two senior executives are indicted by a federal grand jury on
charges of selling as new, more than 60 thousand vehicles that had been driven
by company executives for as long as five weeks with the odometer
disconnected. They were found out when reports began coming in, after some of
them were stopped for speeding, but told officers they didn’t know how fast they
were going because their odometers had just been disconnected.

needs to look at a new marketing
strategy and yes - change the name. The

Passing - Jackie Gleason “The Great One” - (71) of
cancer. Received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of
an aging pool shark in the movie “The Hustler.” His
albums of mood music sold in the millions in the 50’s and
60’s. Many of the album covers were adorned with
Salvador Dalli paintings. Gleason will be remembered
forever as “Ralph Kramden” in “The Honeymooners.”
The series was born as an adjunct to the “Cavalcade of
Stars” on Dumont television in the early 50’s with Gleason subbing for host Jerry
Lester in the summer months. The original Alice Kramden was played by Pert
Kelton. Art Carney was cast as “Ed Norton.” Eventually Audrey Meadows and
Joyce Randolph would join the cast. CBS then offered him a staggering $8,000
a week to leave Dumont and so he did - creating “The Jackie Gleason Show.”
That show ran originally from 1952 until 1959 and again from 1962 to 1970. “The
Honeymooners” series was spun out of that show and ran from 1955 to 1956.
Orson Welles dubbed him “The Great One” and the name stuck.

Bill Graham
is set to produce an
outdoor rock concert - the first of its kind on July
4 in Moscow. Joining Soviet artists will be
American bands Santana, the Doobie Brothers,
Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor. Most of the $600
thousand cost is being picked-up by Apple
Computer founder Steve Wozniak.
Grant Tinker - head of CTG (Grant Tinker-
Gannett) productions announces a video version
of “USA Today.” The show will be produced by
Steve Friedman, former executive producer of
the “Today” show. The half-hour, five-night-a-
week series will have the pace of “Entertainment Tonight” and will employ a four-
section format now featured by USA Today - News, Money, Sports and Life. No
anchors or staff members have yet been fixed for the series.
