Mikhail S. Gorbachev is facing mounting criticism about his economic and ethnic
problems and reforms. He’s losing momentum and acknowledged that the
country is in an acute crisis, but her argued at a party conference that the only
way out is to accelerate the changes, particularly the establishment of a market
economy.
President Bush suspends the 18-month-old dialogue with the PLO because they
did a no-no in Israel last month - trying to land on an Israeli beach. The attempt
was foiled.
An earthquake in northern Iraq kills 10,000 as entire villages are destroyed.
Coal miners with ax handles converge on the Romanian capital to hunt down
those involved in a deadly anti-government rally a day earlier. The miners were
called in by President Iliescu.
The death toll reaches 19 after a flash flood soared through parts of Shadyside,
Ohio. 18 are still missing.
The International Aids Conference opens in San Francisco as activists were -
active and 75 of them were taken into custody.
A man distraught over the repossession of his car walked into a finance office in
Jacksonville (Fla.) and began spraying everyone with gunshot. Eight died, five
are wounded and the gunman killed himself.
The Labor Department says that
consumer prices rose .2% in
May.

of throat problems. The concert

Television news -
Good Morning America beat “Today” for 24 weeks in-a-row and Co-host Joan
Lunden of GMA gets signed to a new 5-yearcontract.
Merlin Olsen is leaving NBC and will go to CBS for football coverage. Meanwhile,
NBC hires Pat Riley as an NBA commentator.
NBC and ABC will not run Burger King ads featuring characters out of “The
Simpsons” - a popular cartoon show from rival Fox. No cross-promotion of
competing programs is the reason.
Possible image problem - NBC is having trouble
with the image of a new show - The Fresh
Prince of Bel Air starring rapper Will Smith. With
all the 2 Live Crew controversy, there may be a
backlash. It’s not a rap show, but it’s a show
starring a rapper. Quincy Jones is the co-
executive producer.
