Month” where listeners are asked to send in their names
for daily drawings, whereby WINS will pay one month’s
bills for their rent, groceries, food, cleaning and laundry
and utilities. Each WINS DJ has their own category - so if
you win on the Jack Lacy show, he’ll pay your food bill for
a month and so on.
But wait - the airstaff of station WINS (1010) goes on strike for more pay. They
contend that the station is doing much better financially. The station says it had
offered to guarantee the announcers an income of $16,000 annually, an increase
of $3,000 over the old contract. Jock Fearnhead, station manager, says the
WINS program schedule of top-40 music is being maintained by supervisory
personnel. WINS is one of the most-listened-to stations in the nation.
Over at rival WNEW, they’re staging a Miss National Portable Radio month. A gal

Singer Jerry Lee Lewis of Sun Records replies to critics in England and the U.S.
via an open letter. Seems he’s in big trouble for marrying is 13-year-old cousin:
“This whole thing started because I tried and did tell the truth. I told the story of
my past life, as I thought it had been straightened out. I sincerely wanted to be
worthy of the decent admiration of all the people young and old that admired
what talent (if any) I have. If you don’t believe that the accuracy of things can get
mixed up when you are in the public’s eye then I hope you never have to travel
this road I’m on.”

“I hope that if I am washed up as an entertainer, it won’t be because of this bad
publicity, because I can cry and wish all I want to, but I can’t control the press or
the sensationalism that these people will go to get a scandal started to sell
papers. I you don’t believe me, ask any of the other people who have been
victims of the same.”

DJ’s Alan Freed and Art Ford debate “Does Anyone Get Hurt By Rock ‘n’ Roll” on
WCBS-TV’s “Right Now” show. Ford is kind of a rock ‘n’ roll foe - saying
basically the music was trash with some good stuff (at times). Freed admitted
that there was a lot of “junky stuff in r ‘n r three or four years ago,” but said the
quality of the music “had improved considerably since then.” He attempted to pin
some of the blame for anti-rock on ASCAP (Rival BMI is making a mint on rock
songs), but didn’t explore this angle very far.
