Two bombs are thrown into a downtown restaurant in Cyprus, killing one
American and injuring six.
President Eisenhower’s personal physician discloses the President will be
hospitalized somewhat longer than first forecast. He won’t get out before the
middle of next week.
A Venezuelan airliner carrying 74
persons crashes as it limped back
to Idlewild Airport after one of its
engines quit. The plane, which took
off from the New York airport got as
far south at a point 250 miles east
of Norfolk and turned around. Just
as the plane was almost back at
Idlewild (32 miles east of Asbury
Park, NJ), it began dumping fuel (a
normal procedure), but the fuel
caught fire as it left the plane. Other
pilots say the burning fuel looked like a torch. The last radio transmission from
the pilot was frantic - “Gas Caught Fire.” 20 victims were Americans.
Entertainment - Rudy Liberace (24) - brother of the famed pianist - is booked in
jail on a burglary case near Los Angeles. Young Liberace is a film editor at
Warner Brothers. Apparently he had an argument with his wife and got liquored-
up. Police say the film editor tore a board off the redwood fence surrounding his
home. Driving away, he came to the home of someone named Dick Millar, who
complained young Liberace was beating on his door with a rubberhose and for
some reason, believed his wife was inside the home. His famed brother said “I’m
Shocked! Rudy was in the Army in Korea and since he’s been back he’s been
one of those boys who can’t touch liquor. As soon as he takes a drink, he snaps.”
Singer Jane Froman divorces John Curtis, the
airline pilot who saved her life in a crash in Portugal
12 years ago. The crash which brought them
together and led to their romance attracted
nationwide interest and a movie was made about
her comeback from serious injuries.

Hedda Hopper says that Dean Martin
and Jerry Lewis are breaking up their act
again - this time for good. “I’m happy at
last,” Lewis told her. He said the latest
feud with his partner involved their
appearance in a projected picture “Damon
and Pythias, which Lewis also is to direct.
Martin flatly refused to perform in the film.
Jeanne Crain is accused of infidelity by her estranged
husband Paul Brinkman. The accusation was made in
a cross-complaint for divorce.
Viewers are shocked this week on the CBS Television
program “Climax.” Actress Judith Anderson, starring in
“The Circular Staircase” uttered the word “Damn.” She
said after the program - “I just got carried away by my
role and didn’t know I had said the word until it was too
late. Says assistant producer Robert Adams - “We
regret it deeply when a slip of this kind occurs. It happens very rarely. Miss
Anderson is a great stage actress and puts her whole self into every role. When
such an actress gets carried away by a role - that’s when slips happen.”
Two lions break free from their cages at a Rome circus, leaving hundreds of
patrons running screaming. One of the lions broke the back of circus mule with a
blow of the paw, and then clawed two ponies across their faces. Both were
caught quickly.
New at Disneyland (In Fantasyland) - Walt Disney revives “3-D” at a theater
dedicated to the showing of the medium. The pictures include a musical subject,
a Donald Duck cartoon and one with Mickey as well. Says Walt; “The 3D vogue
went by so quickly that there are probably many people who were hardly aware
of it. Therefore, I thought a revival might be a good thing, just for curiosity
seekers if nought else.” Also debuting at Disneyland this week - Tom Sawyer
Island and a boat ride through the miniature world of fantasy found in Disney
films and productions.
On the $64,000 Challenge on CBS Television - MC Sonny Fox
slips and gives an answer to a question to contestant Bill
Pearson. The producer, Louis Cowan let the $32,000 award
stand. Also on the show with Pearson was actor Vincent Price.

The film showed Sonny Fox, referring to two of the eight parts of the question
had said; “There are two more. Michael ... Oh, No 2 and 4. One of the answers
that contestant Pearson gave was “Michealangelo.” Pearson said he didn’t hear
the answer because he was concentrating so hard and the sound in the isolation
booth was poor. Vincent Price says he is convinced Pearson did not hear the
answer.
MGM says it is diving into the television business. The studio says it will release
some 770 feature films made prior to 1949 to television stations. MGM says it will
handle its own distribution, negotiating directly with the stations. In addition. The
studio will begin producing new material especially for television.
Marilyn Monroe announces that she and
playwright Arthur Miller will be married sometime
between now and July 13. Meanwhile, Miller is in
Washington, testifying in front of the House
Committee on Un-American Activities - saying he
had made errors about his involvement with Red
activities, but denied he had ever been “under
Communist party discipline.” He said he “wouldn’t
deny” He had contributed to Red front groups -
“I’m here to tell you the truth.”
Clark Gable believes that showing old movies on
television will hurt the stars. “Why should the public pay to see the stars they like,
when they can see them on TV at home for nothing?”

Television news - Steve Allen decides to book Elvis
Presley on his NBC-TV show for July 1. Allen says that
Presley will be presented in a dignified manner and will
not repeat the gyrations that led to widespread criticism
after his recent appearance on the Milton Berle show.
Walter Winchell says he plans to present a variety show
over NBC beginning October 12. The TV variety format
will be a first for the commentator and Broadway
columnist, who limited his earlier appearances to
news/information broadcasts.
Allan Sherman is named producer of the new Herb Shriner variety show - set to
begin in fall on CBS television. Sherman will still continue to produce “I’ve Got A
Secret” as well.
Gore Vidal (30) returns to television after 8 months. His
script with a Civil War theme will be broadcast on NBC-
TV’s “Playwrights 56” on Tuesday night.
Up and coming - Shari Lewis (21) will begin “Shari And
Her Friends” over WPIX-TV in New York starting June
23. The program will combine magic, music and
puppetry every weekday at 5pm.

An FCC examiner gives his blessing to allow XETV
(Tijuana) Channel 6 to beam ABC-TV shows into the
San Diego area. The move was protested by local stations KFSD-TV and KFMB-
TV. The examiner concluded “there is no basis for concluding that XETV,
licensed by a friendly foreign government, may not compete freely and lawfully
with stations licensed by the U.S. across the border for dollars of U.S.
advertisers.”
“I Love Lucy” will be entering its sixth season this September and the show
confounds almost everyone in the business. It’s still at or near the top of the

ratings while it’s opened doors for Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball and their
production company “DesiLu” to produce many a prime time special.

Radio news -
Bob Crane who did mornings on WICC Bridgeport is heading to
Hollywood to do mornings on KNX - the CBS-owned AM station.
He replaces Ralph Story on August 11. Crane is said to be
making $40 thousand his first year. He’s credited with much of
WICC’s buildup to the top spot in Southern New England. Good
luck Bob!
Music news - Rock ‘n’ Roll not gratis -
The Miami Board of Review, originally
appointed to act as a censorship group
for comic books, gets into the rock ‘n’ roll
act after several area concerts by Bill
Haley & The Comets . The concerts went
well, despite a non-segregation policy.
There was only one arrest when a youth
began to argue with police. But at least
one board member (The chairman)
doesn’t dig rock ‘n’ roll - calling it “Worm
‘n’ Wiggle.” Chairman Regina McLinden
says she intends to wage a fight against
rock via her pulpit and the schools with
an invitation issued to the clergy and
school authorities to meet at this month’s board meeting. She describes rock ‘n’
roll dancing as “nothing more than shoving boys and girls around” and “vile
gyrations,” adding the “fad can get out of hand unless we act now.”
The Andrews Sisters confirm their reunion and will begin recording this week.
Their prepping a June 28 date at the Las Vegas Flamingo, where they last
appeared in 1953.
