Rajiv
Gandhi
to the White House with an expression of firm
support for Indian efforts to maintain national unity in the
face of a powerful Sikh separatist movement.

Two Arab Gunmen seize a TWA jetliner with
more than 100 Americans and forced it on a
terror-filled odyssey. Returning it to Beirut, the
pilot said they killed an American passenger,
reportedly to be a U.S. Marine. Later, Shia
Muslim leader Nabih Berri frees a Greek singer
and two Americans.
President Reagan says that the hijackers of the
TWA airliner should “for their own safety,”
release their mostly American hostages: “They’d better turn these people loose.”
All remaining American passengers are taken from the hijacked TWA jet at Beirut
airport to one or more secret locations in the city, according to Shia leader Nabih
Berri... Later, the hijackers free another 64 hostages.
Dies -
Karen Ann Quinlan
, who lapsed into a coma a
decade ago, prompting an historic right-to-die court decision
after her parents sought to have her disconnected from a
respirator, is dead of pneumonia at her hospital bed in New
Jersey.
Passing
- Vic Tanny
- millionaire owner of
the nation’s first chain of gymnasiums (73).
Says fitness guru Jack LaLanne - “Tanny was
the first to reshape the concept of a
gymnasium from a room where grubby men
simply sweated under barbells into one where chromium-plated,

controlled weights were set in carpeted suites with adjacent spas, tennis courts
and swimming pools.”

Pittsburgh Pirates broadcaster Bob Prinze is eulogized as “no saint, but a fiercely
independent soul with a heart as big as a center field, who cut a wide, exciting
swath though Pittsburgh and in places from here.” Prince was the voice of the
Pirates for nearly 3 decades. He died last Monday of complications following
cancer surgery.
Jann Wenner
- founder of Rolling Stone magazine,
takes over “Us” magazine. He and a partner just paid
$30 million for celebrity magazine. He’ll be a full-time
editor and driving force for the new acquisition.
Rolling Stone magazine just hit the million mark in
circulation. Jann also co-starrs in the new movie
“Perfect” with John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The movie is based on a Rolling Stone cover story;
the film’s ad campaign depicts its stars on a mock
cover of the magazine. “Us” has been publishing for
eight years and considered a distant #2 to competitor
“People” magazine.
Hot Jazz - David Sanborn’s
“Straight To The Heart” LP has
been topping the jazz charts. It’s
his ninth album, but Sanborn (39)
says he doesn’t consider himself a
jazz player. “I started to play the
saxophone for therapy, because
I’d contracted polio when I was 3. I
spent a year in an iron lung and
was paralyzed from the neck down
for a year after that. I did recover
pretty much completely, but I have
Week of June 11, 1985
some residual music atrophy in my left arm and right leg, which kid of interferes
with my left-hand articulation. I always told myself that was the reason I couldn’t
play bebop. Too demanding.”
Moving up the charts - “The Mary Jane
Girls” - backup singers and now,
opening act for Rick James. They are
Joanne (JoJo) McDuffie, Candice
(Candy) Ghant, Kim (Maxi) Wuletich and
Yvette (Corvette) Marine. Even though
they had a 1983 best-selling album, their
“In My House” is in the top-10 and getting
attention.

“Topview” from IBM. It’s been out nearly
a year. The program is designed to turn
the IBM PC into a “multitasking”
machine, allowing you to run more than
one program at a time. If you’re doing word processing, you can, for example,
access a spreadsheet at the same time. You press a button on the keyboard or
the mouse and, you’re using the other program!

Bill Cosby is set to appear in a series of
3-minute videotaped messages about
missing children.
Universal says it is moving up the date to
“Back to the Future” starring Michael J.
Fox. President and Chief Executive
Officer Sidney Sheinberg says he really
likes the movie. “Maybe I’ll be a fool, but
I think it’s the most commercial movie
since “E.T.” ... we have the potential to
catch lightening in a bottle.” The movie is the second of two summer movies from
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment (the first is “Goonies.”) “Back to the
Future” - was supposed to come out in July, will be moved up to June 21st.

Breach-of-contract-lawsuit - Actress
Donna Reed loses a bid to regain her
role as Miss Ellie on “Dallas” when a
judge refused to halt production of the
hit television series. Reed signed a
three-year contract in October 1984 to
play Miss Ellie, but Lorimar informed
her in April that the company had
decided to reinstate Bel Geddes in the
role. Lorimar is paying what it owes
which is $17,250 a week for the next
two years. Reed believes when she
signed the contract that she would be appearing as Miss Ellie and not sitting
back and collecting her salary. Reed said in the lawsuit that her exposure on
“Dallas” was worth far more than the wages.

programmed into themed weeks.
11-1am
