U. N forces attack Somali weapon sites...Secretary Of
State Warren Christopher announces that the U.S. will
send a reinforced infantry company of 300 troops to
Macedonia to join a U.N. observer force intended to
prevent the Balkan war from spilling over into another
former Yugoslav republic.
A settlement is reached that ensures satellite
broadcasters, microwave - relay TV systems and others
that have sought to compete against cable operators, will
now be able to buy programming owned or controlled by
those operators. Rivals complained for years that the industry refused to sell, or
drove up prices of programming such as VH-1, MTV, CNN and others.
The owners of the Boston Globe agree to sell the paper to the New York Times
for $1.1 billion. The sale ends family control of one of the last major independent
newspapers in the country.
Mia Farrow (48) wins custody of the three children she
and Woody Allen (57) share. In the brief - the judge said
Allen had “demonstrated no parenting skills that would
qualify him as an adequate custodian for children the
filmmaker sought.”
CBS sets August 30 as the premiere for David Letterman’s
move to the network...Burt Reynolds petitions for a divorce
from Loni Anderson... Ted Danson’s wife Cassandra
Danson files for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences...
After much ballyhoo, Phil Donahue cancels a show featuring former “Jeopardy!”
employees alleging game tampering and sexual misconduct. No guest could be
found to defend “Jeopardy’s” side in the allegations.
The U.S. Post office debuts its “Legends of American
Music” stamp series. The stamps include the
likenesses of Dinah Washington, Ritchie Valens, Bill
Haley, Clyde McPhatter, Otis Redding and Buddy
Holly.

Dies - Alexis Smith (72)- Tony Winner and leading lady of cancer. Won for the
musical “Follies.” Starred in “Night & Day” (1946) and “The Adventures Of Mark
Twain (1944).
Richard Webb (77) - known to millions as “Captain Midnight.”
Webb, who suffered a long debilitating respiratory illness, shot
himself to death - he was 77.
Arthur Alexander (53) - artist and
songwriter. Best known for “You Better Move
On” in 1962 (also recorded by the Rolling
Stones) and “Anna” (go with him), also
recorded by the Beatles. Alexander died
during a rehearsal in Cleveland (heart attack).
Ray Sharkey (40) - TV and film tough guy - starred in
“Wiseguy” of aids.
Sports - The Montreal Canadians
take the Stanley Cup, beating the LA
Kings 4 to 1 in game 5...Wayne
Gretsky announces that he may be
retiring...Commissioner David Stern says the NBA has
cleared Michael Jordan of any wrongdoing amid
allegations that he lost ore than $1 million in gold bets.
