In hospital - President Eisenhower undergoes an
exploratory operation in the early morning hours,
just 24 hours after he awoke with symptoms of
indigestion reminiscent of the fateful heart attack
he suffered last Sept. 24. This time, however, the
president’s trouble was an obstruction of the small
intestine which all official sources emphasize had
no relation to his cardiac condition.
Soviet Premier Bulganin, in a letter to President Eisenhower, calls on the United
States, Britain and France to join with Russia in withdrawing some of their armed
forces from Germany.
President Eisenhower is back on his feet and walked with some assistance from
his hospital bed to an armchair 15 feet way.
Buenos Aires - the government says it has crushed a bloody, 12-hour revolt by
followers of Juan D. Peron, ousted President of Argentina, in four major cities.
President Eisenhower personally turns down a Russian bid for all members of
the U.S. Joint Chiefs of staff to visit the Soviet Union.
Gov. Harriman of New York enters the race for the
Democratic Presidential nomination.
Communist Party Chief Nikita Khrushchev, touring the
region with President Tito of Yugoslavia, told a cheering
crowd at Stalingrad that the United States is the richest
country now “but tomorrow, we will be richer.”
A honeymooner falls 6500 feet to his death from a two-
engine DC-3 Piedmont airliner flying from Charlotte to
Asheville. Oren A. Pruitt went to get his bride a drink of
water when he apparently opened the wrong door. His body landed near a
cemetery near Shelby, NC.
New York - Six children are killed when tons of earth rumble down the sheer side
of a 25-foot-deep excavation and buried them. Police and firemen brought in a
giant crane and bulldozers and dug for almost six hours. A seventh child was
removed from the mass of dirt and is hospitalized in critical condition. Two others
narrowly escaped. All the dead are between 6 and 10 years old.

Sports - Floyd Patterson, with a broken right hand halfway through the fight,
storms past the fists of Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson to take the heavyweight title
on a split decision in 12 furious rounds at Madison Square Garden.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities
initiates contempt of Congress action against singer Paul
Robeson after a session in which the Negro singer
declared, “You are the bad Americans… you ought to be
ashamed of yourselves.” Robeson later told a newsman,
“There was no contempt. I answered every question. I
was just standing my ground.”
Tenor Frank parker is leaving Arthur Godfrey after six
years. A CBS spokesman said there was no comment
from Godfrey, who has fired more than 20 members of his
“family” in the past three years.
