General Dwight D. Eisenhower retires his five
stars and closes 37 years as an Army officer. Before
closing, he issued a strong appeal for the free
world’s maintaining a collective front composing the
use of spiritual, economic and military strength in the
face of communism. Eisenhower received a fourth
Oak Leaf cluster for his distinguished service medal
from President Truman.
A government order in the republic of Ireland says all
pigs must be white and not yellow. The all-white pig
produces better bacon and pork.
The Douglas Aircraft Company is developing a jet-propelled airline capable of
going 600 miles an hour. The plane, dubbed the DC-8, will have a capacity of 80
persons and should debut either in ‘56 or ‘57.
A device is patented to help forgetful television
actors, combining a television camera with a
prompter. The patent, awarded to Mary Thielen of
Scarsdale, NY, is for a mechanical instrument that
displays an actor’s lines, stage directions and
timing. The lines and/or directions are printed on a
roll and displayed in front of the camera. The
device should also help with actor “straying” during
commercial reads.
Pitney-Bowes introduces an electric office folding machine, eliminating the need
to hand-fold paper forms. It is described as the first true desk-model folding
machine - about as big as a typewriter. The device can fold up to 5,000 sheets
and hour and can be operated by one office worker.

campaign.

In baseball, one of the biggest transactions hits the
America League. The Boston Red Sox and Detroit
Tigers trade a total of nine players including these
stars: Third Baseman George Kell and Outfielder
Hoot Evers goe to the Red Sox. Kell was third in
batting for the league last year... The Tigers get
First Baseman Walt Dropo, Outfielder Don Lenhardt
and Infielder Johnny Pesky.
Dinah Shore signs an exclusive TV contract with
NBC... NBC announces that “Kukla, Fran and Ollie”
will expand to a half-hour from its current 15
minutes.
On “Toast Of The Town” this Sunday are guests
Yehudi Menuhin, Robert Merrill , Roberta Peters
and Eartha Kitt. Ed Sullivan hosts.
