Defense Secretary Robert Gates simultaneously fires the civilian and military
leaders of the air Force because oversight standards for the U.s. nuclear arsenal
had deteriorated on their watch. Gone are Gen T. Michael Mosely - Air Force
chief of staff and Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne.
John McCain calls for tougher sanctions against Iran as that country’s
controversial president issued another verbal broadside against the U.S. and
Israel.
Sen. Edward Kennedy undergoes a 3-½ surgery at Duke University Medical
Center to remove a malignant brain tumor. He’s OK and will undergo radiation
and chemotherapy.
May unemployment leaps to 5.5% and the price of crude oil soars to a record

Sept. 1 whether to fully end Jones’ suspension. Meanwhile, the Cowboys agree
