An interim Iraqi government representing a mix of the country’s main ethnic and
religious groups is appointed after weeks of wrangling over who would lead the
country. The new body, including a prime minister, president, two vice presidents
and 32 Cabinet ministers, replaces the U.S.-appointed Governing Council.
The U.S. Army says that thousands of soldiers who were scheduled to leave the
military will be ordered to stay of their united are being sent to Iraq or
Afghanistan.
CIA Director George J. Tenet , who presided over a string
of intelligence failures, announces he will resign the post
he has held for seven years.
Iraq’s new interim prime minister Iyad Allawi, in his first
policy address to the nation, urges insurgents to halt
attacks on U.S. forces, saying it would be a disaster for
the country if foreign troops departed prematurely.

actor who became one of the most popular
president’s of the 20 th century and who changed
the political landscape.
A week of memorials on both coasts begins and a
state funeral will be held Friday in Washington.
