President Jorge Serrano is forced from office as
President of Guatemala under intense pressure from
military commanders and civilian business leaders - a
week after he suspended democratic. The reinstated
Congress will name a civilian ruler.
President Clinton withdraws the nomination of C. Lani
Guinier to head the cvil rights division of the Justice
Department, concluding she stands for principles he does
not support.
In Somalia - 49 are killed and more than 150 are injured
in clashes between peacekeepers and a Somali warlord’s
gunmen. It’s the worst fighting since the United Nations
assumed control of Somalia from U.S. troops.
Although forced into bankruptcy last month - distribution of packaged diet food to
857 franchises of Nutri-System is guaranteed says Michael Heisley, who is
running the company. Nutri-System has laid off 1,800 employees and closed 283
company-owned stores.
A freighter carrying hundred of illegal Chinese immigrants - runs aground off a
New York City beach. Seven are killed as waves of immigrants leaped from the
ship and struggled to get to shore in the chilly waters.
The “Gridlock Sam” column in the New York Daily News tells readers that
regulations allowing parking on only one side of the street were suspended on
Thursday of this week - but they were not and readers wound-up getting with
$25-$50 parking tickets. The paper received about 100 calls from readers. The
City Department of Transportation told motorists to send tickets, along with a
copy of the column, to the Parking Violations bureau.
Judy Woodruff begins co-anchoring duties at CNN this
week. She had been a Washington correspondent for
PBS’s “MacNeil/Lehrer news hour.
Disney enters into the interactive market - announcing
that it is helping to develop an “Aladdin” video game with
Virgin Games and manufacturing giant Sega. Chairman
Jeffrey Katzenberg said at an electronics show: “A lot of
people have wondered if Disney was ever going to leap

into this field. Now the technology has presented us with an opportunity to
actually bring things to it. In the past, video games have not generally offered a
sense of story or emotion - that’s were we come in.”
This week -The White House begins receiving electronic mail through something
called the Internet - a nonprofit system that connects universities, businesses
and other organizations by computer. President Clinton and Vice President Al
Gore notified the public about the service with an electronic posting: “As we work
to reinvent government and streamline our processes, the e-mail project can help
to put us on the leading edge of progress.” The White House will now accept
your electronic mail or e-mail letter, send you back a receipt and file the letter by
subject or category.
British Telcom says it will buy 20% of MCI and that the coupling will build a global
telecommunications network that will accelerate the delivery of new services and
create a formidable worldwide competitor to giant AT&T.
Rabbinical authorities in Israel revoke a certificate declaring that Pepsi conforms
to Jewish dietary laws and is kosher. They complain that Pepsi is promoting a
culture that would corrupt the nation’s youth through rock music concerts and
advertisements featuring scantily clad woman. Pepsi’s current theme is “the
choice of a new generation.” Loss of the “Kashrut” certificate will cost Pepsi
about 20% of sales in the Haredi community. A product like a soda is deemed
“acceptable” by kosher laws, but may be deemed
unacceptable if its preparation or marketing violate
other Jewish laws, such as those governing
observance of the Sabbath or requiring modesty in
dress.

In Cleveland - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum finally breaks
ground after many delays. The grand opening is expected in 1995. Funding
comes from $62 million in bonds plus $22 million from private investors.
Retailer R.H. Macy & Co announces plans to create its own 24-hour cable
shopping channel. Macy’s has forged a partnership with Don Hewitt - longtime
producer of CBS’ “60 Minutes,” former CBS executive Tom Leahy and Chuck
Dolan, head of the Long Island-based Cablevision Systems Corp. The channel -
to be called “TV Macy’s” - will offer the full range of merchandise available in their
department stores.
Katie Couric anchors the first in-depth interview with first
lady Hilary Rodham Clinton next week in an hour-long special
on NBC. “Hillary: America’s First Lady,” will explore how
Clinton is redefining the role of First Lady, developing
America’s new health-care plan and juggling her
responsibilities.
Connie Chung begans co-anchoring the CBS evening news
with Dan Rather.

station for $1 million for breach of contract. Thomas had
been with the station since 1986 and currently stars in

Passing - Country music star Conway Twitty (59)
of complications from surgery after a blood vessel
ruptured in his stomach. The singer collapsed on his
tour bus during a rest stop in southwest Missouri on
the way home to Hendersonville, Tenn. from a
performance in Branson. Born Harold Lloyd Jenkins,
Conway won CMA awards in ‘72, ‘73, ‘74 and ‘75.
Twitty had a total of 94 hits on the country charts
with over 40 #1 hits and most others in the top-40
rankings. The singer got his first break as a
rockabilly artist in the 50’s, writing songs for Sun
Records’ stable of singers that included Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and
Johnny Cash. Twitty began singing too - and his “Only Make Believe” hit #1 in
1958. Twitty crossed over to the country charts, with his first charted recorded in
1966. Some of his top country hits include “Hello Darlin’,” “Tight-Fittin’ Jeans” and
“Linda On My Mind.”
