Washington - President Bush and Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev write
the final chapter of the 45-year cold war and sign a treaty slashing their nation’s
stockpiles of deadly chemical weapons and reach agreement in principle on a
treaty which makes cuts in their nuclear weaponry.

meetings on a good note. It ended at a
first-ever White House news conference
with the two superpower presidents.
At San Francisco, Soviet President
Mikhail S. Gorbachev finishes his seven-
day North American tour - ending it with
Ron and Nancy Reagan as well as South
Korean President Roh Tae Woo. He told
Stanford students at a speech that “The
Cold War is now behind us. I think and hope we’re entering a long period of
peace.”
The Secret Service is looking into an incident in which one of their agents
reportedly shoved Condeleezza Rice (35), a Soviet affairs specialist and one of
the Bush Administration’s top-ranking blacks. She was in the farewell line at San
Francisco International Airport when she was shoved by an agent from the field
office.

Television news -
Charlie Rose who anchors CBS overnight newscast “Nightwatch,” is set to
anchor a new syndicated series “Personalities.”
New faces on the troubled “Today” show. Due to
declining ratings and revenue, these new faces will join
Bryant Gumbel, Deborah Norville and Willard Scott -
Faith Daniels, correspondent Katherine Couric and
Joe Garagiola. “Today” had been No. 1 in the morning
show ratings until NBC brought Norville onto the show
as a newsreader in August, leading to Jane Pauley’s
decision to leave.
Larry King signs a new five-year contract to remain with
CNN for a reported $8 million. King, who is 56, said he
had offers from others including CBS, but said the 5-
year contract was very unusual and feels secure at CNN.
NBC says it has signed David Letterman and “Tonight” fill-in host Jay Leno to
new multi-year contracts.
“Aunt Bee” - Items belonging to the late actress Francis
Bavier were auctioned at her Raleigh, NC home. One fan
even bought a rake for $45.00.
A new cable channel debuts this week - E!. The channel
is cleared on over 500 cable systems with some 14
million subscribers. It’s actually a makeover of the 3-
year-old old Movietime channel. MTV’s Lee Masters is at
the helm, and he promises a bright channel with each
hour divided into 25 segments such as news, gossip,
health, beauty and other subjects.
