freedom fuels progress. “The key is freedom - freedom of thought, freedom of
information, freedom of communication.”

Reagan and Mikhail S. Gorbachev
wind-up their fourth summit by putting
into force the historic INF treaty
heralding as opening a new era of
nuclear disarmament and boasting of
a more steady improvement in
superpower relations.
Goodbye Moscow and on to London -
President Regan and Soviet leader
Gorbachev part company in the heart
of the Kremlin.
Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev says that there will be no changes in his
country‟s human rights policies despite President Reagan‟s emphasis on this
issue during the Moscow summit. Both summed up the summit though, by
agreeing they had moved superpower relations „from a dangerous track to a
safer one.”
Hailed by fanfare and cheering crowds, president Reagan savors London‟s
pageantry-filled tribute to his performance at the Moscow summit and a toast
from prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as “one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.”
Washington - President Reagan ends his journey to the Kremlin in good spirits.
He told a red-white-band blue welcome home ceremony that his Moscow summit
signaled a “momentous” event in East-West relations.
The Federal Home Loan Bank Board announces a record $1.35 billion cash
payout to shut down two insolvent savings institutions in Costa Mesa, California -
the biggest U.S. cash bailout to date.
Three freight cars packed with explosives blow-up at a railroad station 65 miles
south of Gorky, killing at least 68 and injuring 230 in Russia.

More than 5,000 people gather to honor the memory of Robert F. Kennedy
standing on a hillside overlooking his grave. He was assassinated 20 years ago
this week.
Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee A. Iacocca has a new
book: out this week is “Talking Straight.”
A wide theory that human AIDS viruses originated in
recent years from related viruses harbored by African
green monkeys has been refuted by new data which
shows distinct differences in the molecular structure of
the human and monkey viruses.

New York Yankee Manager Billy Martin is suspended
for 3 games and fined $1,000 for throwing dirt on an umpire.
Technology -
IBM unveils seven new personal computer models designed to plug holes in its
product line and to combat growing inroads into its business by other PC makers
such as Compaq. The new PC‟s include three desktop models built around Intel‟s
top-of-the-line 80386 microprocessor chip
Consumer Reports takes a swipe at the Suzuki Samurai, one of the hottest on
the American car market. The magazine said it is giving the Japanese four-
wheel-drive vehicle its first “not acceptable” rating in a decade because of what
the group said were basic design flaws that can lead to deadly roll-over
accidents.
