President Reagan backs routine testing for the AIDS virus saying “we have a
moral obligation not to endanger others ... If a person has reason to believe he or
she ma be a carrier, that person has a moral duty to be tested for AIDS. Human
decency requires it.”
President Reagan announces that Federal Reserve Board
chairmen Paul Volcker step down from that post in August. Alan
Greenspan will be nominated to fill the post.
A federal judge orders NASA to make public the tapes
containing the Challenger crew’s last transmissions before the
ship exploded. A transcript of the tape was released, but the
tape may contain more content or show voice inflections if the
crew was aware of any problems.
Two rare white tiger cubs are stolen when thieves make off with a rental truck in
New York. The cubs were on their way to appear on the CBS morning program
with Siegfried and Roy. A plea was made on the program to return the two cubs.
TV real estate (seminar) pitchman Albert J. Lowery -
best known for his get rich quick on real estate
infomercials, files for chapter 7 bankruptcy. Lowery
blames his troubles on bad real estate deals in the
Lake Tahoe area.

In Duluth, truck driver Robert Benson pulled off the
road to get some sleep. When he awoke, he found
himself floating down the St Louis River in his truck.
He crawled out and the Coast Guard was called to
find his truck.
Brooke Shields graduates from Princeton
University with honors with a major in romance
languages with an emphasis in French. “I’ve proven
something to myself. I didn’t expect to get honors but
I worked as hard as I could from day one.”

Michael Jackson drops out of The Jehovah’s Witnesses. An
official didn’t give a reason for the singer’s decision.
Elton John says he’s going to take a year off of live performing to
rest his voice. The singer said his voice has become lower in pitch
following a throat operation last year.
Jim Belushi is charged with misdemeanor assault and battery
after he allegedly knocked down Bobby Henson for spitting on the car of Jim’s
girlfriend.
Pat Robertson of CBN and the 700 Club says the Jim Bakker
PTL scandal, along with the recent Oral Robertson life and death
plea for money “hit the evangelical world like a bombshell” and
that he must lay off 500 workers at his religious network. Most
other well-known TV ministries have also seen a decline in
pledges.
NBC announces that Bryant Gumbel will be the prime-time host of the network’s
1988 Summer Olympics coverage from Seoul.
Joe Namath joins NBC as an NFL foot analyst. He’ll be paired with Marv Albert
on NFL telecasts beginning next season.
“Les Miserables” gets 8 Tony awards including one for best musical. Linda Lavin
gets a Tony for best actress in “Broadway Bound.”
