The Pentagon readies a new program to establish heroin use detection centers
for returning Vietnam servicemen.
Brigadier General John W. Donaldson is charged with murdering six Vietnamese
civilians while a brigade commander in the Americal Division. The incidents were
said to have occurred between November 1968 and January 1969.
Search parties find the bodies of actor and World War II hero Audie Murphy and
five others in the charred wreckage of their airplane atop Brushy Mountain in
Virginia.
The United Steelworkers of America reach agreement with all but one of five
major aluminum companies, winning a 30% pay hike over 3 years. Alcoa is set
to increase prices by 6%.
President Nixon dedicates the 436-mile
McClellan-Kerr
Arkansas Navigation Project
linking Oklahoma and Arkansas with the Gulf
of Mexico. At $1.2 billion, it is the costliest
waterway project so far. It will mean “a whole
new era of growth” for the “new maritime
states” it serves, said the President.
Imprisoned Teamsters President James R.
Hoffa says he would not run for reelection and that he would support Frank
Fitzsimmons for the job as Union boss.
A Hughes Air West jet airliner and a Marine Corps jet fighter collide and crash
near Los Angeles. 48 are feared dead.
The nation’s unemployment rate matches a nine-year high - 6.2% compared to
6.1% in April.
