President Reagan cancels his 10-day Fourth of July vacation in California as long
as American hostages are held in Beirut.
An Air India Boeing 747 jumbo jetliner flying at 31,000 feet dives into the North
Atlantic about 120 miles southwest of Ireland. A bomb is suspected. All 329
aboard are believed to be dead.
President Reagan, ruling out “a violent rescue mission,” considers slapping
economic sanctions on Lebanon and closing the Beirut airport to step up the
pressure on Shia Muslims holding 40 American hostages.
The White House insists on the immediate and unconditional release of all 46
Americans held hostage in Lebanon, including the seven kidnapped before the
hijacking of TWA flight 847.
Gamble? - Coca-Cola is still getting tons of
complaints from those who describe the
New Coca-Cola as lacking the old formula’s
bite and zing. One says it’s thrown the whole
company into disarray. One employee said -
“They’re yanking people of other positions
and off of other products trying to close the
floodgates. They’re gong to have to short-
shuffle everything.”

Rock star Madonna is planning to marry
actor Sean Penn in August after shooting on
his current movie ends in Atlanta.
Television news
- “Miami Vice” producer
John Nicolella says he’s not worried and knows others will be copying his show
this season. “If anybody tries to imitate the show, they will be imitating last
season’s. We’re going to try to continue to top ourselves, to not repeat ourselves,
to reach limits.” The show moves into different locations next season including
New York for a two-hour special.
Mary Tyler Moore will be returning in a sitcom titled “Mary” in September.
