President Reagan receives the report of his AIDS commission and immediately
directs his special assistant for drug policy to devise within 30 days “a course of
action that takes us forward.”
…The report’s principal recommendation - that federal anti-discrimination laws to
protect the rights of the ill and infected be expanded to include the private sector.
Federal guidelines on AIDS in the workplace recommend that AIDS-infected
employees be permitted to work as long as they are able and allows managers to
take disciplinary action against individuals who refuse to work with AIDS-infected
colleagues, do not, however, have the force of law.
The nation’s troubled thrift industry posted a near-record $3.8 billion loss in the
first quarter of 1988. Most of the insolvent s&l’s - 133 - are in Texas.

Mikhail S. Gorbachev
makes an impassioned
appeal to delegates at a Communist Party conference to
adopt his proposed overhaul of the soviet system and said
socialism will die if they don’t.

Dominated by organized crime - The federal government

The Supreme Court rules that states must let utilities pass on to customers
wholesale rate hikes approved by the federal government.
A plant worker cleaning out a tank mixed chemicals releasing a cyanide cloud
that killed four and left 20 others injured. The tragedy occurred at the Bastian
Plating Co. in Auburn Indiana.

announced this week in the wake of congressional concern over reports that the
military has increases shipments of such items.

Tiffany (16) ends her court conflict as she withdraws her
emancipation petition and is returned to the guardianship of
her mother, Janie Williams. Tiffany’s aunt and former
temporary guardian, Julie Abbas, will continue as the singer’s
traveling companion during personal appearances.
Former Roxy Music lead Brian Ferry ends his five-year performing hiatus and will
embark on a 30-city U.S. tour beginning in August.
Debbie Gibson becomes the youngest artist to write, produce and sing a national
#1 hit record. She did it with “Foolish Beat.” Debbie is 17. This is compared to
rival teen star - Tiffany has made it strictly as a singer and personality.

arrested for allegedly hitting her husband and a young
women after she found them together.
Roulette Records executives Morris Levy and Howard
Fisher are found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to extort

MCA and a venture group are bidding for Motown - with a
spec value of about $50 million.
