Johannesburg - More than 15 are killed and at least 50 wounded in clashes with
police during riots and looting in Cape Town’s nixed-race districts.
Sanjay Gandhi (33) - son of Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi is killed in a glider crash.
Former Dallas Police Chief Jesse Curry, who headed
the department when President John F. Kennedy was
assassinated in Dallas, is dead of a heart attack.
The Carter Administration announces that nearly
130,000 Cubans and Haitians who entered this
country illegally this year will be permitted to remain at
least six months and receive limited federal benefits.
The Agriculture Department eases its grain embargo policy against the Soviet
Union, allowing American trading companies to sell foreign grain to the Russians.
Jordan’s King Hussein calls for a shift in U.S. policy away from Israel and toward
support of “the emergence of a free and peaceful Palestinian homeland.”
President Carter agrees to sell Jordan 200 advanced tanks equipped with night
vision sights, reversing an earlier decision.
In Rome, President Carter begins an eight-day European tour and warns the
Western allies they are being tested and must meet the Soviet challenge without
“reckless confrontation” or another Cold War.
President Carter caps a two-day visit to Rome. He
emerged from a meeting with Pope John Paul II and
declared that they shared “unfinished tasks” in dealing with
hunger, poverty and refugees.
President Carter says he has information that the Soviet
Union has ordered the withdrawal of “less than 10%” of the
85,000 troops it has in Afghanistan, which he says is not
enough to mean a significant easing of the crisis.
Ramsey Clark, returning from his private mission to Iran, said government
officials “should do their duty” if they believe they can legally prosecute him for
violating President Carter’s ban on travel to Iran. Clark, a former U.S. attorney

general and nine other Americans traveled to Tehran two weeks ago and
attended an international conference on Iranian grievances against the United
States.
The Census Bureau reports that the U.S. median age has topped 30 for the first
time in history.
More than 6,000 Churches of Christ have launched a nationwide campaign to
remove sex and violence form television. Shows the group finds objectionable
are “Soap,” “Charlie’s Angels,” ”Dallas,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Newlywed
Game,” Dating Game” and “Three’s a Crowd.”
Boston - Leonard Smith walks out of a state mental hospital a free man seven
months after he convinced jurors he was insane when he killed baseball star
Lyman Bostock.
Tells Ladies Home Journal - Dan Rather , who will succeed
Walter Cronkite as CBS News top anchorman, says curiosity
has led him to try illicit drugs, including heroin. “As a reporter
- and I don’t want to say that that’s the only context - I’ve
tried everything.” Rather said he told his son and daughter,
both in college, that if they had to try marijuana, they should
do so at home around people who care about them.
Jobs for this year’s college grads are up 8% to 10% over
1979, with engineers in greatest demand.
Sports - (Montreal) Roberto Duran takes the WBC welterweight title from Sugar
Ray Leonard on a close decision.
John McEnroe makes fast work of Australia’s Kim Warwick in the final of London
Queen’s Club grass court tennis championships.
Tracy Austin reaches the semifinals of the women’s grass
courts tennis tournament at Eastbourne, England.
At Springfield, NJ - Jack Nickleous becomes the first golfer to
win the U.S. Open twice on the same course at the Baltusrol
Golf Club.
Olympia, Greece - The Olympic torch is lit in ancient Olympia and handed to the
first of the runners who will carry it on the 3,040-mile journey to Moscow.

a pitcher to throw at a Houston batter.

Kingston NY. Attending - Desi Arnaz with his
second wife, Edie Mack and Lucille Ball with
hubby Gary Morton. Desi Arnaz Jr. flew in from
Hollywood with his wife, actress Linda Purl.
Radio news -
Detroit rock ‘n roll station WABX-FM will air
WLUP-FM Chicago talent Steve Dahl’s show.
Dahl is he’ll go national and this is a great first
step. WABX-FM will get the show over lines, but
eventually and hopefully, will switch to satellite.
Dahl made a little noise last year with his “Do ya think I’m Disco” single and plans
more comedy record releases.
WABC New York is dialing for dollars. If the station calls
you, guess the amount in the jackpot (or listen to WABC)
and win. DJ Johnny Donovan randomly dialed comedian
Henny Youngman . He’s not a WABC listener and couldn’t
give the correct amount, but he sure joked on the air.
WPLJ-FM New York will be broadcasting concerts from
Central Park - its second year of doing so.
The FCC has broken the exclusivity of the so-called 50,000
watt clear channel AM stations and will add as many as
125 new one kilowatt AM stations to their channels. They’ll still have 750 miles
of protection.
So far, 70 stations have signed to air Murray the K’s “Soundtrack of the ‘60’s”
weekly radio show. Kaufman contends the show “will give people enough space
to zero in on their own deja-vu. Kaufman’s getting busy. He is preparing a
Time/Life cable television show, based on the artists he helped launch during the
1960’s. He’s also in the midst of preparing a feature film in which he projects the
next big era of music. He also wants to do a state fair tour featuring acts of the
1960’s Murray says he shied away from nostalgia shows until now because he
felt that the 1950’s belong to Alan Freed. “Mine was the ‘60’s Beatle era,” said
Kaufman.

Music news - Just signed to RSO Records - Irene Cara and her first single is
from the movie she stars - “Fame.”
Donna Summer is the first artists signed by David
Geffen’s newly formed and as yet, unnamed label. Her
future has been the subject of talk ever since she filed a
$10-million suit in January for her release form
Casablanca Records. She’ll begin work on a new album
with her longtime producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete
Bellotte. Look for it in the fall.
Seven years after her husband, Jim Croce was killed in a
plane crash, his estate is the subject of lengthy lawsuits. His widow Ingrid is
suing his former Lawyers, managers accountants, publishing company and
record company charging fraud and breach of duties.
Country more popular - An industry survey says County has now become the
second favorite form of recorded music in America. Rock still leads.
Television news -
CBS News diplomatic correspondent Marvin Kalb will join
NBC News in a similar position beginning next month.
“Saturday Night Live” is searching for new talent. Visits to
improv clubs in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles as well
as mid-summer auditions should net some great new faces for
the show. The show will continue, despite the fact that none of
the regular Not Ready for Prime Time Players will not be
returning, nor will the show’s producer - Lorne Michaels be
creatively involved. Gilda Radner and some of the other Prime Time Players will
sign agreements with NBC to develop projects for the network.
CBS captures 8 of the top-10 shows in the ratings.

Three’s Company
“The Muppet Show,” filming its fifth season ATV’s Elstree studios will take a
break from television after the completion of the present 24 segments to make
one or two more feature movies. Is it the end of the TV series?
The time has come - after subbing for Johnny Carson on his
“Tonight” show for 30 times - David Letterman finally gets
his own show - beginning this week. “The David Letterman
Show” will be seen Mon-Fri from 9-10:30am. Letterman is
calling it a talk show with comedy. Three comedians will be
regulars - Edie McClurg, Valri Bromfield, Bob Scarlatta and
Marc Goldstein.
“The Paper Chase” which aired on CBS during the 1978-79
season is coming to PBS. The series stars John Houseman as a tough and testy
law school professor.
