Victory parade - 200,000 cheer veterans of Operation Desert Storm in
Washington D.C.
Most military and civilian personnel are ordered evacuated from Clark Air Base in
the Philippines after a volcano dormant for six centuries began exploding.
President Bush has granted the Soviet Union $1.5 billion in agricultural credits to
help Mikhail S. Gorbachev and to further help political stability in the area.
The White House announces that President Bush will meet next week in
Washington with Boris N. Yeltsin. But it’s a fine line, as the Administration does
not want to undermine Mikhail Gorbachev. Yeltsin is the first elected leader to
poise a direct challenge to Gorbachev’s continued role at the helm of a troubled
Soviet political system.
Bulgaria - A speech by Vice President Dan Quayle turns into an anti-Communist
rally with more than 20,000 Bulgarians waving American flags, shouting “U.S.A!”
and chanting, “We don’t want communism.”

Sports - NBA Playoffs - The Chicago Bulls defeat the Los Angeles Lakers with
big ratings - according to NBC.
National League owners approve two expansion cities - Denver and Miami for
1993 membership.
Technology -
Microsoft releases
MS-DOS 5.0 this
week - its newest
version of the 10-year-
old DOS operating
system. You need a
PC with Intel 286, 386
and 486
microprocessors to
take advantage of its
upgrades. A DOS-5.0
upgrade kit will cost
$99.95.
(57-SX) IBM
announces four new aggressively priced personal computers. The new models
are based on Intel’s 386 SX microprocessor. IBM also announces it will become
the first PC maker to use Intel’s 486 microprocessor that runs at 50mhz. It also
announces a new diskette drive designed for new diskettes that hold up to twice
as much date as existing floppy diskettes. The cartridges are only 3 ½ inches
wide!
Entertainment news -
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting a Humvee - the military vehicle. And, it’s
not available to the general public, so he’s the first civilian to get a custom-built
model. Humvee is short for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle and
were a fixture in the Persian Gulf conflict.
The wedding of Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland is put on hold.
Radio news - (leaked to radio by a rival record company) Geffen records is
ticked-off because a promotion rep from rival Mercury Records gave radio
stations an advanced copy of the Guns N’ Roses single “Bad Apple.” Why? The
rival record company rep did so, so stations could play another single Mercury

was pushing. Oh Boy! Geffen wants to know how the promotional man got the
tape - which is a rougher mix than what is supposed to be released.

accountability in the Milli Vanilli lip-synching debacle.
Television news -
ABC confirms that it would begin rotating
guest hosts on “Into the Night” - now with
Rick Dees. Dees will relinquish his hosting
duties sometime between July 15 and Aug.
1. Partly owned by Rick Dees - it has lost
money for ABC - about $10 million since
its July 16 debut last year. Only 44% of all
ABC stations even carry the show and
Dees did all he could to get more on
board. It’s reported that ABC has
approached David Letterman.
Smart move? -Jean Smart is leaving
“Designing Women.” She’s concentrating
on movies.
On Lifetime - “Retaining Laughter” - with
host Jane Curtain and Martin Mull and four
of today’s hottest comediennes for a
hilarious celebration of women’s wit and
wisdom.
MTV will celebrate its 10 th anniversary with
a prime time special on ABC.
New job for Russert - Tim Russert, NBC
News bureau chief in Washington along
with Al Hunt of the Wall St. Journal - debut
as political analysts on the “Today” show.
“Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne
Michaels says he’s sorry to see Jan Hooks
leave the show and believes NBC could have done more to keep her. “I’m always
reluctant to see ‘Saturday Night’ be a training ground for the movie studios and
other networks,” said Michaels. Hooks is joining the cast of “Designing Women”
at CBS.
