Christian Herter
of Massachusetts agrees to nominate
Vice-President Nixon for re-election at the Republican National
Convention in San Francisco.
Prisoner Floyd Wilson attempts to escape from Alcatraz Prison.
After an 11 1/2 hour search, he was found in a cave on the
water’s edge, admitting he didn’t know how to swim. It was the
12th attempt by a prisoner to break out of the island.
The luxury liners
Andrea Doria
and Stockholm collide in the fog
about 45 miles south of Nantucket Island at about 11:30pm. The Andria Doria
began to list so bad, launching lifeboats was not an option and reports its
condition as “danger immediate.” The Coast Guard responds immediately. First
reports are that only three are injured on the Stockholm. The Andrea Doria was
steaming to New York from Genoa. The Stockholm was outward bound from
New York, heading for Goeteborg.
At least eight Coast Guard Cutters and two passenger liners are at the scene,
attempting to help 1704 passengers and
crew off of the Andrea Doria. The
Stockholm can make her own way.
Eventually, she carried 533 Andria Doria
passengers back to New York. It’s
reporting it’s bow is “stove-in and its #1
hold flooded, but it can proceed back to
New York. At least 4 Navy destroyers on
the way.
The
Andrea Doria
sinks in 225 feet of water at 10:00am - 10 1/2 hours after it
was hit. Shaken survivors are taken back New York on various rescue ships. The
voyage was her 101st between Italy and New York. The collision placed a 40-
foot tear in her starboard side, penetrating a third of the way through the beam
(or width of ship).
It’s reported that so far, of the 1704 aboard, 34 are missing.
Staff Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon admitted taking three or four drink of vodka before
he led a laggard platoon on a tidal creek death march.
The United States publishes the new Russian-language magazine, America,
designed to tell people behind the iron Curtain whit life is like in this country. The

64-page first issue was lavishly illustrated with color photographs and told how
the country has a growing middle class.
In England, the word’s out that
Marilyn Monroe
is
hiding from the public by traveling in a hearse like auto
- complete with a small funeral procession. For double
protection, she also hides under a blanket.
Four petroleum tanks explode near Dumas, Texas,
killing 19 in
their tracks
and injuring dozens. The fireball could
be seen in Amarillo - 40 miles away. The
fire began small and as firefighters
began pouring water on it, an incredible
explosion occurred, killing most of the
fireman and others. Flames staggered
men, their clothing blazing or smoking. A
railroad bridge a-quarter mile away was
burned.
The Census Bureau says that nearly
75% of homes in the U.S. had one or
more TV’s as of February, compared with 67% in June of 1955 and 12% in 1950.
Premier Nasser
reveals to ‘frustrate” the United States
and Britain and build the high Aswan Dam on the Nile
without their help.
Britain slams the bank door on Egyptian cash and assets
and sets up a three-power conference with the United
States and France to consider further steps to deal with
President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s grab of the Suez Canal.

breaks a batting slump
and hits a three-run homer as the Brooklyn Dodgers win three-
in-a row against Cincinnati.
Shooting the film “Something of Value” in Narobi, Kenya - Rock
Hudson rescues a script girl attacked in her sleep by a
marauding baboon. Hudson was shaving nearby with a mirror
nailed to a tree trunk when he heard screams. Grabbing a
shovel, he chased the baboon from the girl’s safari wagon. No
one was bitten.
A deadly Cobra snake escapes on the Hollywood set
of the television series “The Adventures Of Hiram
Holiday.” The star, Wally Cox, was supposed to
charm the snake when it suddenly vanished. The cast
and crew dispersed but in minutes, the trainer found
the snake and place it into a basket.
Near the top of the charts this week is “Allegheny
Moon” by Patti Page, written by Dick Manning and Al
Hoffman. The pair say Rock and Roll will be only for
rowboats, saying about that genre of music “we can’t
write that bad” and that “even teenagers are wearing
of this current craze.” The pair also wrote “Hot Diggity” and other hits for Perry
Como.
Dorothy Lamour
gets her star on the Hollywood walk of
fame right near Hollywood and Vine streets.
Radio news - NBC radio debuts “NBC Bandstand” - all live
music.
