A Croatian army force seizes key
crossroads towns from rebel Serbia
in cross-border fighting that the
United States and NATO experts
warn could ignite a wider war in the
Balkans.
O.J. Simpson trial - Completing an
about-face with their own witness,
attorneys for O.J. Simpson accuse
an FBI agent of bias toward the
prosecution, while government
lawyers stood up for the agent’s
credibility and used him in an attempt to undermine another defense witness.
Susan Smith , who drowned her two sons last fall,
and for a time, persuaded the nation they were
kidnapped, is sentenced to life in prison.
Disney announces it is buying Capital Cities/ABC
for $19 billion, creating the largest entertainment
company in the world. The deal is subject to
shareholder approval and federal antitrust review.
Disney’s chairman, Michael E. Eisner will remain
chairman and chief executive.
Next day - Westinghouse offers to acquire CBS for
$5.4 billion. CBS agrees. The combined company
will be called Westinghouse/CBS.
On the 10th day of Waco congressional hearings - Atty
Gen Janet Reno vigorously defends her decision in 1993
to approve a tear-gas assault on the Branch Davidian
compound near Waco, Tex, but conceded that, in
hindsight, she would have delayed the action that ended in
fiery tragedy.

Burger King says its special Pocahontas kids
club meals are a smash. They’re selling 8 million
a week, making it Burger King’s best promotion
ever (to date). McDonalds recently did a
promotion related to the “Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers.” It did well, but not as well as Burger
King.
In sports - Doctors reveal that Mickey Mantle’s
liver cancer has spread to his lungs and his
prognosis looks grim.

Diana Ross will begin her first nationwide concert tour in more than four years.
Education software - Broderbund Software Inc
and Learning Co agree to merge in a deal
valued at $440 million. Broderbund has long
dominated the consumer educational software
market with “edutainment’ products such as its
living books and Carmen Sandiego series.
Learning Co is best known for its more nuts-
and-bolts educational products such as Reader
Rabbit, Student Writing Center ad Learn to
Speak foreign language titles.
High Tech - AT&T says that it will offer cellular
and paging services to its long-distance customers in its first major wireless
expansion since it acquired McCaw Cellular Communications last September.
Jay Leno on the movie “Waterworld” - “It takes place in the future, where 90% of
the planet is covered by water, and the other 10% is covered by Starbucks.”
Trends - Power Rangers are sliding in sales. Once
considered the hottest licensed property,
distributors and suppliers say they’re selling 50%
less “Power Ranger” product. Another video just
came out - “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers:
Forever Friends.”
Michael Jackson video “You Are Not Alone”
premieres simultaneously on ABC, MTV and BET.
A revealing shot of Jackson floating naked in the
water when producer’s discovered his anatomy
was visible in the water - they quickly had to change things.
“The Box” - the first and only interactive all-video music network, celebrates 10
years. The channel actually began in Miami and did a national rollout some 5
years ago. Today, it can be seen in some 20 million households in 50 markets in
the U.S, U.K. and Puerto Rico. Music clip requests cost between 99 cents and
$3.

Controversial singer Courtney Love ends her set midway
through her Lollapalooza show in Pittsburgh. The reason? A
fan threw a shotgun casing onto the stage. Love’s husband
Kurt Cobain used a shotgun to killing himself last year.
TNN (The Nashville Network) says its flagship prime-time
program “Music City Tonight” will get a total face-lift
including a new name and host. Also, the channel says it is
cutting back on music videos. Instead, you’ll see sports and
outdoor-themed shows.
Radio news - Westwood One, a national syndicator, says it is
introducing the MTV Radio Network, set to debut in September.
The network will offer simulcasts of concert tapings including
“MTV Unplugged,” special programming around events such as
the “MTV Video Music Awards, daily MTV news feeds and more.
More radio news - Kato Kaelin - O.J. Simpson’s
caretaker gets a shot as a talk-show host. This week, he
begins a shift on KLSX-FM (97.1) in Los Angeles, as the
station shifts from classic rock to all talk. It’s only FM talk
station in Los Angeles. Susan Olson (Cindy of the “Brady
Bunch”) also joins the lineup as a talk host. Kaelin is
known as America’s most famous house guest.
