The deposed Shah of Iran - Mohammed Reza
Pahlavi , dies in a military hospital near Cairo. An
Iranian official says the death of the Shah will have
no immediate effect on the fate of the 52 American
hostages being held there.
Former President Richard Nixon arrives in Cairo for
the funeral of the deposed Shah of Iran. The former
president didn’t have kind words for the current
administration’s treatment of the deposed shah: “I
come to Egypt this time to pay my last respects to a friend for 30 years, a loyal
friend and an ally of the U.S.” I think President Sadat’s guts in providing a home
for the shah in his last days when the U.S. turned its back to one of its friends is
an inspiration to all of us.” “... The treatment of the shah by the (Carter)
Administration after he left was shameful. It is one of the black pages of
American foreign policy.” Sadat was the only world leader who openly befriended
the 60-year-old shah and offered him sanctuary.
The Pan-Am building - a unique part of the Manhattan
skyline, is sold in what is described as the biggest sale

that time, Pan Am owned 10% of the property.
A fire spreads heavy smoke through busy Union Station
in Chicago, killing one and injuring at least twenty

another section of the complex. That area was
unaffected.
In San Diego - Independent president candidate John B Anderson calls for
federal civil rights laws to be extended to protect non-citizens. The Illinois
congressman said he would create a joint U.S.-Mexico commission to help
border towns solve their problems and seek more information on the social and
economic effects that illegal aliens have on communities.
