McMartin Pre-school trial - After almost six years after his arrest - teacher Ray
Buckey takes the stand for the first time and tells jurors he never molested
anyone.
A Manila TV station that packed nearly an hour’s worth of commercials during the
91-second Tyson-Spinks bout last year is fined for airing too many
advertisements.
Birdie May Vogt, born the daughter of a Union Army captain the year of Custer’s
last stand, dies at age 112, after being recognized as the oldest documented
living person.
Business - Bristol-Myers and Squibb agree to merge in a $12 billion stock swap.
Carl’s Jr. founder Carl Karcher and six of his relatives agree to settle civil
charges of insider trading by paying a total of $664,000.

Brigitte Bardot,
now an animal rights
activist - is accused of having her
neighbor’s donkey castrated because it
was getting too friendly with her own
donkey. Industrialist Jean Pierre Manivet,
who lives next door to Bardot, says his
donkey, Charly had been castrated while
the actress was looking after it for him.
Radio news -
WMCA New York switches to a mostly
financial and business format. This takes
place as WMCA transfers owners to
Salem Communications, a predominately
religious broadcaster. Talk host Barry Gray will move to nights (8pm) and Barry
Farber remains in overnights. Alan Colmes will exit.

Going away - as more and more record companies have stopped shipping
45rpm records to radio stations as promos - to play on the air. Many have
converted to compact discs. RCA says it will discontinue supplying vinyl singles
to radio as of August 1. IRS and A&M have already stopped.
Passing -
Rick Carroll
- veteran radio programmer who
created “Rock of the ‘80’s and put KROQ on the map. He
was 42 from complications from pneumonia.
In its first full ratings period - Scott Shannon’s “Pirate
Radio” in Los Angeles (KQLZ) is up 2.7-4.3 and did better
in shares in Orange County. Rival KROQ was down 3.0-
2.3.
Heard more and more on morning shows, parody songs.
Some believe they are not as effective as they once
where, since so many are being produced. Heard recently
- “The Oprah Motion” (locomotion), “I Just Can’t Stop
Changing My Face” - a take off of the Michael Jackson
hit “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” and “Vanna, pick me a letter” after the 1960’s
hit - “The Letter.”
WLS is finally throwing the music towel in - the last of the great AM radio stations
to abandon music. Actually, WLS left the top-40 game in 1986, still late by any
AM comparison. Up to now, it’s had an a/c-oldie hybrid format. A recent Chicago
Sun -Times article says the WLS planned to buy out the contracts of both
morning man Fred Winston and afternoon driver John Landecker and that
syndicated hot Rush Limbaugh would be used in the midday slot no occupied by
Don Wade & Roma.

Rod Stewart
says he’s scraping the Spandex as part of a
long-range plan that he and his managers mapped out six
years ago in an effort to restore the performer’s sagging rock
‘n’ roll credibility.
Chuck D announces that the rap group Public Enemy is
ending in the wake of anti-Semitic comments by group
member Professor Griff.
Check out David Bowie’s new band - “Tin Machine” and
their self-titled new album. “Tin Machine” consists of Bowie, Hunt and Tony sales
(Soupy Sales’ sons) and Reeve Gabriels.

Larry Bird
fractures a bone in his back five
minutes into his first scrimmage at the Boston
Celtics summer camp and is expected to be
sidelined for four to six weeks.
Music news -
Island Records is being purchased by Polygram
Records for about $300 million. Island’s most
famous artists are U2.
The Who’s Aug. 24 performance of “Tommy” at the
Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles will be
available on pay-per-view.
Passing - Steve Rubell, the co-owner of Studio 54 when it was at its hottest. He
was 45… Of AIDS.
Compact disc jukeboxes are taking off. One leading manufacturer claims it has
backorders for 250-300 machines. There are about 10,000 CD jukeboxes in
service.

it’s been canceled. He says he’ll be doing a 2-½ minute
radio commentary and perhaps more television.
